Please help support NHERI's Education and Community Outreach<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/facilities/nco/eco/> effort to recruit an outstanding cohort of undergraduates to the 2018 Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/learning-center/reu/>.
The application deadline is February 1, 2018. A downloadable flyer<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public/56/cd/56cd40d8-8f65-4329-8f89-29b035a4e839/reuflyer-101617-rev1119.pdf> is available.
For undergraduates in STEM majors, the NHERI REU program<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/learning-center/reu/> presents a prime opportunity for hands-on research experience in the field of natural hazards engineering.
Over the course of the summer, students work side-by-side with earthquake, wind, tsunami and coastal engineers, geoscientists and data scientists - all dedicated to mitigating the effects of natural hazards. Participants deploy to NHERI's experimental facilities<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/facilities/experimental/>, computational modeling and numerical simulation<https://simcenter.designsafe-ci.org/> and cyberinfrastructure facilities<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/about/designsafe/> around the country.

The NHERI REU accepts applications from many majors - and may be of special interest to students majoring in engineering, architecture, meteorology, geoscience and computer science.
The NHERI REU is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program. Women, veteran, and underrepresented minority undergraduate students are encouraged to apply.

Morgan State University Introduces Baltimore Youth to Engineering
[https://www.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public_thumbnails/filer_public/c6/d4/c6d432e2-961c-4727-beb9-d54a4805e250/morganstatebooth-news.png__1500x750_q85_subsampling-2.png]
On November 4, 2017, engineering student ambassadors from Morgan State University<http://www.morgan.edu/soe/> participated in the 2017 STEM Expo<http://www.morgan.edu/special_programs_and_centers/center_for_excellence_in_mathematics_and_science_education/stem_expo.html> held at Morgan State, an historically black college and outreach partner with NHERI, which supports the ambassadors' educational efforts.
The outreach project leader is Monique Head, associate dean of research and graduate studies and associate professor of civil engineering at Morgan State. The graduate student lead and coordinator with all ambassadors is Monique Hart, who is a master's student in the department of civil engineering. This annual Expo attracts more than 500 students from the Baltimore area and exposes them to STEM activities, Head says. Students attending the event ranged from elementary to middle to high school aged students (4th-12th grade).
The Morgan State's engineering ambassadors facilitated two activities. They helped kids build a marshmallow-spaghetti noodle structure and test it on a demonstration shake table, and they led the construction of a tower using just 1 sheet of paper and unlimited tape.
During the fall 2017 semester, Head and the engineering ambassadors hosted several schools who came to visit Morgan State University, and they conducted several activities at a local high school - Overlea High School in Baltimore County. The group has plans for similar activities, and ideas for new ones, in the spring 2018 semester. "We have been able to influence many students who were not as familiar with these types of activities and who were new to the idea of engineering as a career path," says Head. "Middle school, particularly 7th grade, seems to be where we can make a difference in kids who are contemplating STEM."
The group plans to have a booth to represent NHERI and the hazard community at the 2018 USA Science & Engineering Festival in Washington, DC in April 2018. "We will make an attempt to connect with Howard University for this endeavor, given their past history and involvement in NSF-sponsored natural hazard engineering," she adds.

UC Davis Hosts International Workshop on Liquefaction

On 14-15 December 2017, the Center for Geotechnical Modeling at UC Davis<https://cgm.engr.ucdavis.edu/> hosted 90 researchers and practitioners from around the world for a workshop on LEAP - Liquefaction Experiments and Analysis Projects.
Nine different centrifuge facilities - from the US, Japan, China, Republic of Korea, Taiwan, the UK and France - performed an unprecedented coordinated series of 23 centrifuge model tests to define the correlation between lateral spreading, density and earthquake shaking intensity for a submerged slope.
Twelve different teams - from the US, Canada, Italy, Colombia, China and Japan - performed advanced numerical simulations of the model tests. The experiment teams, simulation teams, and guests from other universities and private industry participated in the two-day workshop where the simulations were compared to the experiments.
The CGM hosted tours of the centrifuge as well as a post-workshop meeting of the experimenters. The American PI's of LEAP - Majid Manzari (GWU), Mourad Zeghal (RPI), and Bruce Kutter (UC Davis) - are funded by NSF grants CMMI 1635307, CMMI 1635524 and CMMI 1635040.

Payload Possibilities at UC San Diego: Collapse Simulation of Shear-Dominated Reinforced Masonry Wall Systems
[https://www.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public_thumbnails/filer_public/be/76/be76ca13-e874-42ad-af1e-b75ea8cf6d90/ucsd_payload_news.jpg__1000x500_q85_subsampling-2.jpg]
As part of a project aiming to obtain necessary experimental data for understanding the behavior of reinforced masonry walls, project PI Benson Shing and his team will be conducting shake table tests at the UC San Diego experimental facility, starting in April 2018. There are excellent opportunities for payload experiments. Shing and his team encourage NHERI researchers to consider taking advantage of this large-scale test. (Collapse Simulation of Shear-Dominated Reinforced Masonry Wall Systems<https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1728685&HistoricalAwards=false>, NSF Award #1728685.)
Project Summary. Seismic design codes have to ensure that buildings have a low probability of collapse in the event of a severe earthquake. To develop such standards, the ability to assess the collapse margin ratios of building systems designed according to given specifications is of critical importance. Under severe seismic forces, reinforced masonry (RM) wall structures might develop complicated nonlinear behavior involving interaction between steel and masonry. Furthermore, the interaction of structural walls with other elements in a building system could lead to nonlinear behavior and collapse mechanisms that were not anticipated in design, including behavior dominated by diagonal shear cracks. The ability of analytical models to capture these mechanisms and interactions is essential to have an accurate assessment of the collapse margin ratio of a building. The main aim of this project is to obtain necessary experimental data to understand the behavior of RM wall structures to the point of collapse, and to use the data to advance and validate refined as well as simplified analytical modeling methods. In this project, experimental and numerical studies will be carried out to quantify: (1) the influence of wall flanges on the shear strength and ductility of RM walls; (2) the influence of the coupling forces introduced by horizontal diaphragms in a building on the strength and deformation capability of the structural system; and (3) the influence of non-seismic load carrying walls and columns on the drift capacity and collapse resistance.
Shake-Table Tests. For the experimental study, two full-scale RM wall systems have been scheduled to be tested to collapse on the outdoor shake table at the UC San Diego NHERI site.
