Input Welcome for 2018 NHERI Science Plan

The NHERI Science Plan Task Group<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/facilities/nco/science-plan/> is calling on researchers and practitioners in the natural hazards community to make suggestions for improving the current edition of the NHERI Five-Year Science Plan. The Science Plan and feedback form are available<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/facilities/nco/science-plan/feedback/> on the DesignSafe website.

The deadline for input has been extended to July 31.

At the 2018 Summer Institute in San Antonio<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/learning-center/summer-institute/>, 21 funded participants enjoyed daily workshops about preparing NSF research proposals and about resources available to the NHERI community. They also had the chance to network with NHERI senior faculty and site representatives. The event took place June 4 through 6 and drew participation from 71 total attendees, including NHERI Council members, User Forum members, and NHERI EF representatives.

Wall of Wind Challenge Attracts Next Generation of Engineers

Each year, the WoW Challenge invites local high school students to build scale model structures that test their engineering skills against the WoW<https://fiu.designsafe-ci.org/> - a hurricane research facility at FIU's Engineering Center with fans capable of generating 150-mph winds and category five hurricane conditions. The WoW Challenge is hosted by the International Hurricane Research Center<http://www.ihrc.fiu.edu/> - housed within FIU's Extreme Events Institute<http://eei.fiu.edu/> - and is supported by a grant from the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

This year's challenge was to create an aerodynamic building model at least 32 inches high and 8 inches wide that could withstand winds of 50 mph or higher. Students also completed a technical paper and an oral presentation about their design. Six schools participated in the competition.

Coral Park students built a 40-pound cylinder-shaped structure made of cardboard and solid materials. It was the only model in the competition that sustained winds of a category one hurricane (at least 74 mph) - earning the team first place, with a ten-point lead over the second-highest placing team.

The PBS Nova show aired "Rise of the Superstorms" on June 14, 2018. The hour-long piece, available online<http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/earth/rise-of-the-superstorms.html>, focuses on the 2017 hurricane season. At the 6:30 mark, the show features UF wind engineer Forrest Masters and his team deploying a mobile wind weather station in Texas - to measure Harvey's wind structure. Be sure to watch!
