The recently formed Structural Engineering Extreme Event Reconnaissance Network, called StEER, has produced a preliminary virtual assessment (PVAT) report on the September 28 disaster in Indonesia. Authors include Ian Robertson, of the University of Hawaii, Tracy Kijewski-Correa, of the University of Notre Dame, David Prevatt, of the University of Florida and David Roueche, from Auburn University.

David O. Prevatt and the University of Florida Wind Hazard Damage Assessment Group recently produced a preliminary damage report that focuses on the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, the storm that struck the Carolinas on 14 September 2018.

With extensive inland flooding, more than one million evacuees and moderate wind damage to structures, numerous coastal counties in North and South Carolina are now braced for many months of rebuilding and repairs to their infrastructure. "Our thoughts and support are with the people who have lost loved ones and who still may not be able to return to their flooded homes," Prevatt said.

Just twelve months ago, it was Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands that began the recovery following Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Hurricane Florence was much more of an inland flooding event than an extreme wind event. The storm stalled over the Carolinas producing between 30 - 50 inches of rainfall.

In the report, the team makes the case for natural hazards researchers to increase their engagement with the general public and all stakeholders. "Our voices ought to be heard now, in all conversations about building more resilient communities in North and South Carolina," Prevatt said.

MECHS builds hybrid simulation community resource library, announces special issues
[https://www.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public_thumbnails/filer_public/27/22/27225c35-e0ff-4eba-96e1-8cb16b57aa29/mechs_library_news_header.png__1440x720_q85_subsampling-2.png]

The Multi-Hazard Engineering Collaboratory for Hybrid Simulation - MECHS - is an NSF-funded Research Coordination Network focused on broadening the community of researchers that are engaged in hybrid simulation projects.

MECHS, a NHERI partner, aims to foster new research initiatives to tackle emerging scientific challenges.

Over the past few months, the MECHS team has focused on expanding the resources available in its website in several ways, including webinars and two special journal issues and webinars - for which MECHS is inviting paper submissions.

On the cusp of Hurricane Florence, DSR host Dan Zehner was lucky enough to meet up with wind engineer Frank Lombardo. Based at the University of Illinois, Lombardo studies extreme wind events and their effects on structures. Students in his research group traveled out to Wilmington, North Carolina, to learn about in situ wind data gathering.
