Once again, the NSF-funded NHERI network is preparing amazing summer research opportunities for undergraduate students at NHERI experimental facilities (EFs) located across the country<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/facilities/experimental/>.

The Research Experience for Undergraduates<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/learning-center/reu/> (REU) program runs from May through August, in two 10-week cohorts. Each EF will host 2 or 3 undergraduates who will participate in meaningful research projects alongside an experienced faculty mentor.

The application is now online: 2020 NHERI REU application<https://bit.ly/2sbJEfj>.

Faculty colleagues: your influence is vital! Please share this REU opportunity with the high-achieving undergrads you know. Please download and post our flyer: REU 2020 flyer<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public/ad/41/ad41e03d-9de5-4b10-b241-265c2e048c37/2020_reu_flyer.pdf>.

Peek co-authors article on research ethics for Nature

[https://www.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public_thumbnails/filer_public/1f/cc/1fcc0072-d153-406c-bbbf-77f33d57538c/nature_article_img_cropped.jpg__1172x586_q85_subsampling-2.jpg]

Lori Peek, principal investigator of the NHERI CONVERGE initiative, co-authored an article in the November 2019 issue of Nature. Entitled “Disaster-zone research needs a code of conduct<https://go.nature.com/2P1IgVP>,” the commentary urges researchers to study the effects of earthquakes, floods and other natural hazards with sensitivity to ethical dilemmas and power imbalances.

Peek also leads the NSF-funded Social Science Extreme Events Research (SSEER) and Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Extreme Events Research (ISEER) initiatives. She is professor of sociology and director of the Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado Boulder.

The NHERI DesignSafe team, in collaboration with the NHERI SimCenter, will host a 1.5 day workshop on February 18-19, 2020, to bring together expertise in natural hazards engineering and artificial intelligence/machine learning/deep learning (collectively known as AI/ML/DL).

There is no fee to attend the workshop; however, space is limited. Interested participants may read more and apply online in the DesignSafe Learning Center<http://bit.ly/2RTgXi7>.

The deadline for applications is Monday, December 23, 2019.

Roueche presents findings on devastating March 2019 Alabama tornadoes

In the spring of 2019, tornadoes devastated the community of Beauregard, Alabama. A team of Auburn University professors studied the circumstances that led to the destruction on March 3 and the loss of 23 lives. One of those researchers, wind engineer David Roueche, presented some of the team’s preliminary findings to a Columbus State University meteorology class taught by Prof. Scott Gunter. The presentation was called “The Makings of Disaster: How Hazard, Exposure, and Vulnerability Intersected in the March 3rd, 2019 Beauregard, AL Tornado.” The study focuses on the multitude of factors that came together on that fateful day and classifies them into three “ingredients for disaster,” according to Roueche.

The FIU Wall of Wind featured in the news

Fox Channel 61 news recently aired a feature story about Florida International University’s Wall of Wind. The November 2019 story showcases the powerful fan capable of simulating category 5 hurricanes and explains how testing at the facility helps protect vulnerable buildings from wind damage — including advancing building codes. Fox news meteorologist Dan Amarante interviews NHERI researcher and wind engineer Ioannis Zisis, co-director of the Laboratory for Wind Engineering Research at FIU, and Eric Salna, meteorologist and associate director of the lab.

NHERI RAPID supports the DUNEX initiative

The NHERI RAPID facility team spent a week in October collecting coastal data as part of the large-scale DUNEX pilot experiment<https://uscoastalresearch.org/dunex>. DUNEX, which stands for DUring Nearshore EXperiment, is a multi-agency collaborative field campaign to study nearshore coastal processes during coastal storms.

“The DUNEX pilot experiment provided a unique opportunity to apply and demonstrate a wide range of our instrumentation —including the bathymetric survey vessel, drones, multispectral cameras and LiDAR— in a real-world coastal storm setting,” said RAPID facility director Joseph Wartman.
