NSF's Large Facility Workshop, a focus on communications

The National Science Foundation held its annual Large Facilities Workshop<https://www.largefacilitiesworkshop.com/19workshop/> April 2-4, in Austin, TX, at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC). The location allowed for tours of the visualization and supercomputer resources available to NHERI’s DesignSafe-CI and a demonstration of NHERI’s Large-Scale Mobile Shaker truck.
During the session on social media, Dr. Cheryl Ann Blain, communications lead for the NHERI Network Coordination Office, reported on the network’s progress in ramping up the social media presence of the 10-facility network. (Be sure to see the current repository of social media handles for the NHERI network<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/community/social-media/> on the DesignSafe website.) The session led to engaging discussions among LF communication personnel, who shared successful strategies and novel ideas<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/community/news/2019/april/nsf-large-facility-workshop-new-focus-communications/> for engaging the public and underserved communities via social media.
Officers from the NSF Office of Legislative and Public Affairs<https://www.nsf.gov/od/lpa/> highlighted their group’s role in magnifying scientific accomplishments, human interest stories, compelling videos and other content. In fact, NSF has announced that July 2019 will be Natural Hazards Month. This is a huge opportunity for NHERI to publicize what we do and what we have accomplished.
Currently, the NSF communications team is developing a video showcasing NHERI’s accomplishments, which will be disseminated during the month of July. To leverage this great opportunity, the NHERI NCO is working with NHERI facilities to collect and create compelling video materials.
If you or your NHERI facility has important science to share with the world, especially in video format, be sure to contact Cheryl Ann Blain (cheryl.ann.blain at nrlssc.navy.mil<mailto:cheryl.ann.blain at nrlssc.navy.mil>) or Dan Zehner (zehner2 at purdue.edu<mailto:zehner2 at purdue.edu>).

The User Forum Committee welcomes Mohammad Khosravi<http://www.montana.edu/ce/directory/2116837/mohammad-khosravi> and Max Stephens<https://www.engineering.pitt.edu/MaxStephens/> as new members to the committee. Mohammad joins as an assistant professor at Montana State University and previous NHERI post-doctoral researcher from UC Davis. Max joins us as an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh.
The User Forum also elected new officers, including Elaina Sutley<https://ceae.ku.edu/elaina-j-sutley-phd> as Chair, Nina Stark<https://www.cee.vt.edu/nina-stark-asst-professor-ay-civil-environmental-engineering/> as Vice Chair and Stephanie Smallegan<https://www.southalabama.edu/colleges/engineering/ce/smallegan.html> as Secretary for the committee. They all express gratitude to their previous chair, Russell Green, for his great leadership during the first two years, and are looking forward to what is to come for the committee.

SimCenter report: essential simulations
[https://www.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public_thumbnails/filer_public/05/ee/05ee15bf-8d9c-419e-b708-882c9172cf14/ds-report-image.png__1935x820_q85_subsampling-2.jpg]
The UC Berkeley-based NHERI SimCenter recently released a comprehensive report on simulation requirements and software tools for natural hazards engineering of the built environment.
The report, entitled "State-of-the-Art in Computational Simulation for Natural Hazards Engineering<https://simcenter.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public/13/b5/13b5ba3e-f94a-48af-9d12-ca5d0abad5c1/state_of_art_report.pdf>," provides an in-depth discussion of simulations essential for addressing the three grand challenge areas and associated research questions outlined in the NHERI Science Plan<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/facilities/nco/science-plan/>:
1. Quantifying natural hazards and their effects on civil infrastructure;
2. Evaluating the vulnerability of civil infrastructure and social vulnerability of populations in at risk communities; and
3. The creation of technologies and tools to design and implement measures to promote resilience to natural hazards.
Accordingly, required simulation technologies encompass a broad range of phenomena and considerations, from characterization and simulation of natural hazards and their damaging effects on buildings and civil infrastructure, to quantifying the resulting economic losses, disruption and other consequences on society.

A crew from the Center for Geotechnical Modeling at UC Davis took part in the LEAP-ASIA-2019 workshop<https://sites.google.com/view/issmgetc104/round-robin/leap/leap-asia?authuser=0>, hosted at Kansai University on March 13-15, 2019.
The workshop consisted of three days of presentations, including element test, centrifuge model, and numerical simulation results. The collaborative effort was a great step forward in populating a database on Design Safe for current and future work in validating numerical models!

NHERI's International Workshop, March 2019
[https://www.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public_thumbnails/filer_public/e1/c4/e1c47ef4-5d2a-4357-a42f-a1c4ce7b155e/science_plan_workshop_2019_session_news.jpg__1000x500_q85_subsampling-2.jpg]
At NHERI’s spring international workshop, participants gathered in interdisciplinary teams, discussed disruptive technologies and developed research campaigns to advance the NHERI 5-Year Science Plan.
On March 18-19, the NHERI NCO hosted an NSF-sponsored<https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1612144&HistoricalAwards=false> workshop in Alexandria, VA, involving more than 70 participants. The workshop included collaboration with early career, interdisciplinary and international researchers that brought opportunities for collaborations. The workshop covered transformational technologies such as bio-inspired design, advanced computation, data science, materials science, additive manufacturing, robotics, and control theory to help achieve the NHERI Science Plan’s vision of a more resilient and sustainable civil infrastructure.
The workshop had two main objectives:
1. Identify the contributions from disruptive/transformational technologies to the NHERI Science Plan to achieve the vision of NHERI; and
2. Elucidate potential research campaigns encompassing one or all of the hazards under the scope of NHERI.
A report, and presentations from the workshop, will made available soon on the DesignSafe-CI website. Please stay tuned!

Auburn University engineering professor David Roueche tells National Public Radio's Michel Martin that simple fixes could help reduce the loss of life when tornadoes, like the one that struck Beauregard, Alabama, on March 4, 2019, strike mobile homes. Rouche is a wind engineer, StEER Associate Director for Data Standards and DesignSafe user and advocate.
