Science Plan updated for 2020

On Jan 13, the NHERI NCO released the updated version of NHERI’s Five-Year Science Plan.
The Science Plan presents a roadmap for high-impact, high-reward hazards engineering and interdisciplinary research at the NHERI research facilities<https://designsafe-ci.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dc90d9824e5a18416dfe678e8&id=7840a7cabc&e=e2f42abcaf>. The document aims to guide future research in the earthquake, wind, and coastal hazards research community, including NSF and other funding agencies.
This second edition of the plan incorporates community input received at meetings and workshops, from the NHERI-DesignSafe cyberinfrastructure<https://designsafe-ci.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dc90d9824e5a18416dfe678e8&id=fdafa4fa8e&e=e2f42abcaf> and from participants in three summer institutes<https://designsafe-ci.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dc90d9824e5a18416dfe678e8&id=2ca38f3828&e=e2f42abcaf>. It also incorporates outcomes from the International Workshop to Develop Research Campaigns, Interdisciplinary Teams and Disruptive Technologies for the NHERI 5-Year Science Plan, which was held March 18-19, 2019, in Alexandria, Virginia. More than 70 researchers participated — including early-career and senior academics from the U.S. and international universities. Contributors included federal partners, private sector professionals and NSF representatives.

NHERI REU application deadline: Feb 1

Education and Community Outreach (ECO) administrators urge NHERI researchers and teachers to tap high-achieving undergraduates for NHERI’s outstanding research experience for undergraduates (REU) program. During the 10-week summer program, undergraduates work with researchers at one of NHERI’s world-class experimental facilities. Students receive a stipend; travel expenses are included. In particular, the REU program provides valuable hands-on experience for students considering graduate studies.
The REU program is open to undergraduate in any major who are interested in natural hazards mitigation.

Two CONVERGE modules released
[https://www.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public_thumbnails/filer_public/86/a7/86a7f38e-0010-48c9-922d-e485d29b1f79/converge_modules_newsletter.png__800x380_q85_subsampling-2.png]
Since October, the NHERI CONVERGE facility has released two training modules. The Social Vulnerability Module describes the drivers of disaster vulnerability and highlights specific populations in each phase of the disaster cycle. The Mental Health Module emphasizes risk factors that, over time, make certain populations vulnerable to poor disaster mental health outcomes.
Developed with support from the National Science Foundation and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the webinars teach researchers ways to recognize and assist communities that are particularly at risk during a natural disaster event. Upon successfully finishing the training, participants receive a certificate of completion.
Faculty and other professionals are welcome to integrate training modules into their classrooms and workplaces and presentations of their own.
Get details and register for the modules on the CONVERGE website<https://converge.colorado.edu/resources/training-modules>. For updates on future modules, sign up for email updates<https://converge.colorado.edu/signup> from CONVERGE.

NHERI-DesignSafe success at AGU 2019

Michael Grilliot from the NHERI RAPID team and Tim Cockerill with the DesignSafe team at the NHERI booth.
Hats off to the crew who manned the NHERI booth at the AGU 2019 conference, December 9 through 13 in San Francisco. The event attracts more than 25,000 attendees, typically researchers working in fields such as Earth and atmospheric sciences, oceanology, hydrology, and space and planetary sciences.
As visitors stopped by, the NHERI team shared info on network resources for world-class physical and cyberphysical testing. In daily attendance were Dan Zehner, facility scheduling and operations coordinator for the NCO; Michael Grilliot, RAPID operations manager; Tim Cockerill, the DesignSafe deputy project director; and Billy Edge, researcher and lead coordinator of the NHERI Five-Year Science Plan. Throughout the week, representatives from NHERI EFs took turns staffing the booth and engaging with visitors.
A popular feature was the NSF-produced NHERI video<http://bit.ly/37a9y2W>, which demonstrates research facilities in action.
Grilliot reports fielding a lot of inquiries about training – indicating strong interest in NHERI facilities. He noted that a good number of students and recent PhD graduates stopped in looking for jobs or other opportunities. “I think AGU was a great success. The RAPID has already scheduled two users based on AGU conversations, so I think the NHERI booth helped get the word out.”
Cockerill also was impressed and pleased by the interest the AGU crowd showed in DesignSafe capabilities and reports making many new contacts. “It was a fantastic experience, very valuable. I will definitely attend next year,” he says.
The NHERI team looks forward to taking the booth to San Diego for the 2nd EERI Annual Meeting and the National Earthquake Conference (NEC2020), March 2-6.
