On February 18-19, NHERI DesignSafe<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/> in collaboration with the NHERI SimCenter<https://simcenter.designsafe-ci.org/> organized and hosted a 1-½ day workshop on artificial intelligence/machine learning/deep learning (AI/ML/DL)<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/learning-center/training/workshops/2020-tutorials/artificial-intelligence-natural-hazards-engineering/> and their application in natural hazards engineering. The purpose of the workshop was to build a research agenda determining where AI/ML/DL is and can be productively employed in natural hazards engineering research, what techniques hold key promise, and how these techniques may be adapted to the hazards engineering domain moving forward.

Connecting with the SimCenter is even easier with the new User Forum
The NHERI SimCenter recently rolled out a new platform for improved user interaction. The User Forum<https://secure-web.cisco.com/1O-eQg8B0pNG1I8JflIAMcuDxkC4IhmZmyibg2gL0h_anXhLXt9-rYBDjqIAm8sqd0k0maRNJIf51_uv0a900jBrLTtX7GlcOF-H1hPttzNhW-LIxqn7DrdNK5BlH5ORcke5bwrPUvCwQddVbo7k17z9MIqonLsHguUYGiKLiGGUkYSvtSzaNv_sim6jfXPzGjJuGEAm4rJzxnsu3tSkVJQlF2dw3Hv7BE1uyKltEFftQKiCT4p-jx2i5UzBNFGczvFjb5lW0vjHhRmXG_JQxljyOQ11lU7ejW57KYlBU8tCE6fFfk3erXsiXE-7-B5bf8uN1TL59hp7xSbeNO0B44-Zga1CB3SkIfZyP1hNP1f9_XuMAluhyKUkhwdOnxpFyrS5PBb7t5suRZK1kcByn0KmpjQaibT0FwkOdhAQd56AQGUK4IlLxUi0ffW8evw4yFihkcJSD8YdXmv1UZzt2T1Nn0caOR2F2apb-aLx2d1xctaUHpucPPZCbG6NGkWqhcRoH0Yxo9Kowtw2bPHjozG1Pbehk-v3aMn5AaGjgfcVZtDa2hF1FSkM8dyYK0dtDHneG2QmRqmgjYT-kmcu-XUv1IjiAaOT6Y30wpvXW3ow/https%3A%2F%2Fsimcenter-messageboard.designsafe-ci.org%2Fsmf%2F> replaces separate Slack channels and surveys for tool-feature requests. The enhanced platform is a dedicated user forum providing access to questions, observations, and discussions about all SimCenter tools and their installation — as well as general questions and discussion about educational and research applications of the tools. All posts go directly to the SimCenter development team and are available to the user community.

New NHERI-CONVERGE training module available: cultural competence
The Natural Hazards Center is pleased to announce the release of the third CONVERGE Training Module, Cultural Competence in Hazards and Disaster Research<https://converge.colorado.edu/resources/training-modules> — made possible with funding from the NSF's NHERI award. This module introduces participants to academic literature that describes the importance of building cultural competence for extreme events researchers.
This online course is part of a series of online training modules<https://converge.colorado.edu/training-modules> developed by the CONVERGE research team. These interactive, 30- to 60-minute courses cover a variety of topics that researchers — with a special emphasis on students and emerging scholars — can use to quickly educate themselves on conducting hazards and disaster research.
Learn more at the CONVERGE Cultural Competence Training Module Demonstration Webinar on April 3 from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. MDT. Register here<https://bit.ly/3dxyftB>.

On March 3 and 4, 2020, Oregon State University hosted the executive session meeting for the Coastal Engineering Research Board, known as CERB, including a reception at the NHERI experimental facility to highlight cutting edge coastal engineering and science research. CERB consists of Army Corps of Engineers senior officers and civilian engineers and scientists who are experts in the field of coastal engineering. As well as providing broad policy guidance, CERB reviews plans and funding requirements for research projects in consonance with the needs of the coastal engineering field and the objectives of the U.S. Army Chief of Engineers.
At the Corvallis campus meeting<https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2020/02/03/2020-01972/board-on-coastal-engineering-research>, OSU and CERB leadership identified collaboration opportunities and discussed strategic research needed to address Pacific Northwest coast processes and coastal resilience.

Waves meet wind at Florida International University
In March 2020, faculty and students from the NHERI at OSU experimental facility traveled to Miami for a first-hand look at the NHERI Wall of Wind (WoW). The purpose of the field trip was to understand operations and research capabilities for the WoW. Both teams look forward to facility enhancements for NHERI 2.0 (Years 6-10) that will support NSF-funded wind-surge and wave research.
"It is a great opportunity when students and staff from one specialized discipline get to directly interface with folks from a different field," says Dan Cox, PI of the NHERI at OSU facility. "Experiencing a research facility first-hand is definitely more meaningful than watching it via video."
