NCO releases NHERI Impact 2020

The NHERI’s Network Coordination Office recently published a new collection of research articles in a book called NHERI Impact 2020<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/community/nheri-impact-2020/>. The 70-page, illustrated work describes high-impact research projects made possible by our Experimental Facilities. The book features NSF-funded projects that mitigate structural and societal damage from earthquakes, hurricanes and windstorms, storm surge, flooding and tsunami waves.
Download the book here: NHERI Impact 2020<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/community/nheri-impact-2020/>.

MECHS announce real-time hybrid simulation publication library
[https://www.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public_thumbnails/filer_public/96/c5/96c58371-b060-4501-9403-5ca0fb8f45ca/screen_shot_2020-11-04_at_14656_pm.png__2360x266_q85_subsampling-2.png]
The use of hybrid simulation techniques has exploded recently. Researchers are advancing HS theory and practice with scenarios such as severe wind loading, coastal inundation and tsunami loading, seismic-induced fires, thermo-mechanical loading, and even bio-mechanical systems. Researchers are examining approaches such as experimental design, machine learning, uncertainty quantification, nonlinear and adaptive control, decoding instabilities and parallel computing.
To provide easy access to published research in HS, the NSF-funded Multi-Hazard Engineering Collaboratory for Hybrid Simulation<https://mechs.designsafe-ci.org/> virtual community, called MECHS, is now compiling a list of publications in hybrid simulation. The MECHS Publication Library is searchable/sortable. It contains over 250 of the latest research papers from the community, and it is still growing. Each paper is linked through its DOI to the source paper for easy access.

Engineers who Engage: the UC Davis Center for Geotechnical Modeling

As visitors can attest, the NHERI large centrifuge facility at UC Davis has a welcoming, congenial atmosphere. Faculty, staff and students work hard on their projects, and they support each other’s successes. To complement their lab community, CGM has created an effective — and sustainable — Facebook page.
Find out how Ross Boulanger and Dan Wilson at the Center for Geotechnical Modeling weave social media into the lab — to communicate their users’ research successes.

NHERI Tallwood featured in Futurum magazine
The high-profile Tallwood project<http://nheritallwood.mines.edu/> is multi-institutional effort to discover the sustainability and seismic resilience of tall buildings constructed with cross-laminated timber. NHERI researcher Shiling Pei, associate professor at the Colorado School of Mines, leads the project, which involves six institutions and many NHERI researchers. The work will culminate next year in a 10-story shake table test at the NHERI UC San Diego facility.
In October, the Tallwood project was featured by Futurum<https://futurumcareers.com/the-big-shake-designing-tall-timber-buildings-that-are-resilient-to-earthquakes>, a magazine and online platform aimed at inspiring young people to follow a career in the sciences, research and technology. A component of the article is an educational activity sheet<https://futurumcareers.com/NHERI_activity-sheet.pdf> for K-12 teachers.
