The NHERI DesignSafe team is pleased to announce the winners of the 2021 Dataset Awards. This year the DesignSafe team recognized four outstanding datasets for their diverse contributions to natural hazards research. The datasets represent four different categories of data, including earthquake/geotechnical engineering, earthquake/structural engineering, hurricane reconnaissance, and hurricane simulation. The award winners will be invited to present DesignSafe research webinars.

Read about the winners and their work in the FULL STORY<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/community/news/2021/march/dataset-awards/>.

SimCenter’s second report on the "State of the Art in Computational Simulation for Natural Hazards Engineering"<https://simcenter.designsafe-ci.org/knowledge-hub/simcenter-reports/> provides an updated overview and review of the available methods, simulation approaches, and software tools for natural hazards engineering.

This second edition reflects comments and suggestions provided by leading researchers, and it also includes new chapters on disaster recovery modeling and applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies. The report is the result of a concerted effort by a large number of experts in the field of natural hazards engineering, and it is a valuable resource for researchers to incorporate into future research plans.

Congratulations all! Researchers at NHERI sites continue to discover innovative ways to mitigate structural and social damage due to natural hazards.

Engineers Who Engage: Katarina Ziotopoulou
"When Social Media Makes Sense"

Engineers Who Engage features members of the NHERI community with outstanding communication skills. This month, we highlight Katerina Ziotopoulou, assistant professor of engineering at UC Davis, who is a big Twitter fan.

Nearly every day, Ziotopoulou uses Twitter to interact with people and institutions in her professional network, which comprises more than 1,400 individuals.

“Twitter has opened up the doors to an amazing and diverse community,” she says. “It has increased my awareness of the engineering field. I stay efficiently informed about trends and resources in research, in mentoring and teaching, and in academia overall. I get to chime in on conversations I would otherwise miss and have a much broader reach than I otherwise would. Plus, I find terrific value in the sustained interactions with colleagues overseas.”

CONVERGE's newest training module: Understanding and Ending Gender-Based Violence in Fieldwork

[https://www.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public_thumbnails/filer_public/d9/52/d9520bbd-95b4-4246-8350-e5a75e95c1de/b3506b46-3541-4cf9-96ea-e03d9e489112.png__433x289_q85_subsampling-2.png]

In March, the NHERI CONVERGE facility released a new educational tool for natural hazards researchers: Understanding and Ending Gender-Based Violence in Fieldwork Training Module.

This online module, which was developed in partnership with The Fieldwork Initiative, describes gender-based violence in the context of field research. The module tackles misconceptions about gender-based violence and provides real life scenarios and strategies for safe fieldwork practices. This course is part of a series of online training modules developed by the CONVERGE research team. These interactive, 30- to 60-minute modules cover topics that support hazards and disaster researchers and research teams to conduct ethical and methodologically sound studies.
