The NHERI SimCenter held an all-day meeting on October 6, 2017, with invited experts representing target users of SimCenter simulation tools to develop workflow requirements.<o:p></o:p></p>

“We had high expectations before today’s meeting, and this meeting exceeded those expectations. The diversity of intellectual thinking from established researchers, early career researchers, and practitioners fueled many ideas and indicated consensus on tasks
that the SimCenter is working on,” said Steve Mahin, SimCenter principal investigator. “Furthermore, the numerous use-cases identified during this meeting illustrated the value of the SimCenter’s role to transform research. We look forward to continue engaging

Last month, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao and U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart made a stop at Florida International University’s
<a href="https://cec.fiu.edu/" target="_blank">College of Engineering & Computing</a>. During their October 17 visit, they toured FIU’s
<a href="https://abc-utc.fiu.edu/" target="_blank">Accelerated Bridge Construction University Transportation Center (ABC-UTC)</a> and the
<a href="https://cee.fiu.edu/research/facilities/wall-of-wind/" target="_blank">Wall of Wind (WOW)</a>. Both the ABC-UTC and the WOW are federally designated research centers that allow for the study of best practices and research and development in infrastructure
construction.<o:p></o:p></p>

With a major transportation federal infrastructure bill expected in the next year, many of FIU’s technologies offer creative approaches to upgrade the current transportation system in a more rapid, cost-effective manner without compromising safety, particularly

Rathje to Give the Joyner Lecture<o:p></o:p></h3>

The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) and the Seismological Society of America (SSA) recently named University of Texas at Austin Professor Ellen M. Rathje as the 2018 recipient of the William B. Joyner Lecture Award.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p style="mso-margin-top-alt:5.0pt;margin-right:15.0pt;margin-bottom:5.0pt;margin-left:15.0pt">
Rathje, who also is the PI for the DesignSafe Cyberinfrastructure, will deliver the Joyner Lecture at the
<a href="https://11ncee.org/" target="_blank">Eleventh U.S. National Conference on Earthquake Engineering</a> (11NCEE), to be held 25-29 June 2018, and at
<a href="http://seismology2018.org/" target="_blank">Seismology 2018</a>, a joint meeting of SSA and the Latin American and Caribbean Seismological Commission to be held 14-17 May 2018. The William B. Joyner Lecture is jointly awarded by EERI and SSA to those
who have provided outstanding earth science contributions to the theory and practice of earthquake engineering or outstanding earthquake engineering contributions to the direction and focus of earth science research--together with demonstrated skills of communication
at the interface of earthquake science and earthquake engineering.<o:p></o:p></p>

Ian Robertson</a> has been selected as the inaugural Arthur N.L. Chiu Distinguished Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Robertson, recognized nationally for his contributions to tsunami design, is also a leader in Hawai'i’s engineering community
for his expertise in hazard mitigation and structural engineering solutions. Like Arthur Chiu, Robertson is known for excellence in teaching, research and service.<o:p></o:p></p>

Robertson’s recent research has focused on tsunami loading on coastal structures, and the structural design required to resist those loads. He led a large
