An award-winning team of researchers at the University of Arizona and partnering universities is working to develop buildings that will not collapse under the force of major earthquakes, such as last year's 7.1-magnitude quake in central Mexico and 7.3-magnitude
quake near the Iran-Iraq border. The two earthquakes were the deadliest of 2017, killing approximately 900 people combined, flattening hundreds of buildings and leaving tens of thousands of people homeless.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p style="mso-margin-top-alt:5.0pt;margin-right:15.0pt;margin-bottom:5.0pt;margin-left:15.0pt">
The UA-led research team is turning its attention from vertical to horizontal transfer of forces by examining a less-explored, but critically important, piece of the seismic puzzle: steel collectors. These reinforcements in concrete floor slabs, or in special
beams below them, are responsible for horizontally transferring earthquake forces. The partnering NHERI facilities are the
<a href="https://ucsd.designsafe-ci.org/" target="_blank">University of California at San Diego</a> and
<a href="https://lehigh.designsafe-ci.org/" target="_blank">Lehigh University</a>.<o:p></o:p></p>

Downward Path for Seismic Energy. Research into seismic building safety has traditionally focused on walls and braces, which form a downward load path to transfer seismic forces through a building's foundation and into the ground.<o:p></o:p></p>

"You can't out-strength an earthquake, so you actually put fuses — the equivalent of a fuse in your fuse box, a structural fuse — in your frame or wall," explained Robert Fleischman, UA professor of civil engineering and engineering mechanics, and principal
investigator for the project.<o:p></o:p></p>

In Memoriam: Steve Mahin<o:p></o:p></h3>

The SimCenter’s Steve Mahin passed away on February 9, following a courageous struggle with pancreatic cancer. Steve was an inspiring leader and visionary engineer. He contributed to the community in so many ways. It was his far-reaching imagination that created
the SimCenter. We will miss his leadership and his warm friendship. The University of California at Berkeley, where Steve studied and worked,
<a href="http://news.berkeley.edu/story_jump/earthquake-expert-passes-away-at-71/" target="_blank">
has posted an obituary</a>.<o:p></o:p></p>

Hybrid simulations involving experimental substructures on the largest shake table in the U.S. were successfully completed through the collaborative effort of hybrid simulation experts from the
<a href="https://simcenter.designsafe-ci.org/" target="_blank">NHERI SimCenter</a> and
<a href="https://ucsd.designsafe-ci.org/" target="_blank">UC San Diego Experimental Facility</a>. These tests were executed during the commissioning of hybrid simulation capabilities at the NHERI EF.<o:p></o:p></p>

The real-time hybrid shake table testing involved the numerical simulation of multi-story shear buildings subjected to earthquake loading with the upper story of the hybrid model being tested experimentally and excited by the Large High Performance Outdoor
Shake Table (LHPOST) at UC San Diego. Hybrid shake table testing provides an efficient approach for performing parameter studies, by changing the properties and the behavior of the numerical portion of the hybrid model from test to test. The data produced
in these experiments is being curated on the <a href="https://www.designsafe-ci.org/data/browser/public/nees.public/" target="_blank">
NHERI DesignSafe Data Depot</a>.<o:p></o:p></p>

A new study by Chad Furl, postdoctoral research associate, and Hatim Sharif, professor of civil and environmental engineering at The University of Texas at San Antonio, delves into the 2015 Wimberley, Texas floods that destroyed 350 homes and claimed 13 lives.
Furl and Sharif researched the factors that led to the catastrophic flooding and shed light on new ways people in flood-prone areas can protect against future tragedies.<o:p></o:p></p>

On Memorial Day weekend in 2015, the Blanco River rose to a record 40 feet. The swift rise of the water is known as a flash flood, a term familiar to Texans. The Texas Hill Country, where Wimberly is located, is known as “Flash Flood Alley” because it leads
North America as the most flash-flood prone region.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p style="mso-margin-top-alt:5.0pt;margin-right:15.0pt;margin-bottom:5.0pt;margin-left:15.0pt">
The rugged landscape tends to contribute to this moniker, in addition to urbanization. As natural areas become more and more developed, floods become more likely to occur because accumulating rainwater slides off concrete structures with nowhere to go, whereas
plants and soil absorb that moisture. Furl and Sharif also say that flash floods are common in Texas due to its two heavy rain seasons in spring and fall that cause the soil to become oversaturated with rainwater.<o:p></o:p></p>

Hybrid simulation is a powerful technique used to examine the behavior of structural systems that may be too large or complex to test in the laboratory. Physical specimens are coupled with computational models, enabling the physical subsystem to be examined
under realistic conditions. Hybrid simulation has traditionally been used for earthquake engineering, and a new generation of methods is now being developed for wind and coastal engineering problems. Within the NHERI network, hybrid simulation experts have
formed the Multi-Hazard Collaboratory on Hybrid Simulation, called MECHS.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p style="mso-margin-top-alt:5.0pt;margin-right:15.0pt;margin-bottom:5.0pt;margin-left:15.0pt">
The MECHS research coordination network (<a href="https://mechs.designsafe-ci.org" target="_blank">https://mechs.designsafe-ci.org</a>) aims to facilitate the scientific advances needed to establish the theory of and expand the capacity for hybrid simulation
as it applies to multi-hazard engineering. MECHS will be making resources about hybrid simulation available through the DesignSafe site and will also be hosting a series of workshops over the next several years.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p style="mso-margin-top-alt:5.0pt;margin-right:15.0pt;margin-bottom:5.0pt;margin-left:15.0pt">
The first MECHS Workshop "Breaking Barriers and Building Capacity" was held on December 12-13, 2017 at the
<a href="https://ucsd.designsafe-ci.org/" target="_blank">University of California, San Diego</a>. A group of 40 researchers participated, including multi-hazard engineering researchers, graduate students, international partners and interdisciplinary collaborators.
Each participant gave a brief introduction to themselves and their research background. Three discussion groups were held to talk about and identify specific research needs.<o:p></o:p></p>

REU program recruitment efforts a big success<o:p></o:p></h3>

The Education and Community Outreach Committee has worked hard this year to recruit an outstanding cohort of students to participate in NHERI’s 2018 Research Experiences for Undergraduates program. This year, there were more than 100 applicants to fill 30 REU
positions. The selected students will be notified over the coming weeks.<o:p></o:p></p>
