2019 Technology Transfer Committee report now online</h3>
<p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-top: 10px">In November 2019, the<span> </span><a href="http://bit.ly/32wgNAP" target="_blank">Technology Transfer Committee</a><span> </span>held an in-person meeting in Alexandria, Virginia.
Topics included the presentation of several NHERI projects the committee has identified as having implementation potential, the discussion of a proposed publication of TTC findings, and plans for future TTC tasks.</p>

interdisciplinary and combines ideas from engineering, mathematics and computer science.</p>

StEER's post Dorian team aids Bahamian community</h3>

<p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-top: 10px">When it comes to making a difference, disaster reconnaissance teams typically aim at future improvements.</p>
<p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-top: 10px">But with its post-Dorian missions to the Bahamas, the <a href="https://steer.network/" target="_blank">Structural Extreme Events Reconnaissance</a> network (StEER) proved that post-disaster
teams can have an immediate positive impact on local communities.</p>
<p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-top: 10px">On September 24, 2019, shortly after Dorian’s landfall, the first of two NSF-funded StEER reconnaissance teams, <a href="https://www.designsafe-ci.org/data/browser/public/designsafe.storage.published/PRJ-2555" target="_blank">FAST-1</a>,
landed in the Bahamas. The three-person team deployed cameras, including terrestrial, 360-degree cameras, and Applied StreetView technology. They also obtained door-to-door assessments of damaged buildings using the Fulcrum mobile app.</p>

FIU's Salna inducted into Meteorologist Hall of Fame</h3>

<p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-top: 10px">On Feb 1, 2020, Groundhog Day, the Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center inducted meteorologist Erik Salna into the Meteorologist Hall of Fame. The annual honor recognizes scientists
whose contributions have furthered the science of meteorology and broadcast meteorology.</p>
<p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-top: 10px">Salna, who was part of the team that built the Wall of Wind, is the associate director of education outreach for the Extreme Events Institute (EEI) and the International Hurricane
Research Center (IHRC) at Florida International University in Miami. He leads programs such as the Wall of Wind Mitigation Challenge for South Florida high school students.</p>

FEMA report on Hurricane Michael now available</h3>

<p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-top: 10px">On October 10, 2018, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Michael" target="_blank">Hurricane Michael</a> wreaked havoc on the Florida Panhandle. With maximum sustained
winds of 160 mph, Michael made landfall as a Category 5 hurricane between between Mexico Beach and Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City. Forty-seven people died in Florida. Insurance claims totaled $5.53 billion.</p>
<p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-top: 10px">In October 2018 and early January 2019, FEMA’s Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration’s Building Science Branch deployed a mitigation assessment team (MAT) to the affected
areas in Florida.</p>
<p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-top: 10px">The MAT was composed of subject matter experts in a variety of fields, including NHERI NCO member Tom Smith, AIA, RRC, F.SEI and principal at TLSmith Consulting Inc. Smith is an architect
and respected authority on wind performance of buildings.</p>
<p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-top: 10px">The MAT assessed the performance of hundreds of coastal and in-land residential properties, critical facilities, municipal and public buildings, seawalls as well as hurricane evacuation
shelters. The team developed 69 recommendations for actions to take.</p>
<p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-top: 10px">The <a href="https://www.fema.gov/media-library/assets/documents/186057" target="_blank">full report is now available</a>. FEMA encourages the following groups to adopt its recommendations:</p>
<ul>
<li style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px">Federal, state and local governments;</li><li style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px">private companies in the design and construction industry;</li><li style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px">building code and standards organizations;</li><li style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px">and other select stakeholders.</li></ul>
<p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-top: 10px">These 69 recommendations, when implemented, will help reduce injuries and mitigate building and their associated utility system damage from future natural hazard events in Florida
and elsewhere.</p>
