The DesignSafe team is pleased to announce the initial public release of the DesignSafe NHERI cyberinfrastructure www.designsafe-ci.org<http://www.designsafe-ci.org>.

The DesignSafe team is funded by the National Science Foundation's Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) program to create a comprehensive cyberinfrastructure (CI) for researchers in the earthquake, wind, and wave hazard engineering communities. More information about the NHERI program can be found here<http://nsf.gov/news/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=136380>. DesignSafe is the follow on to the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation web portal NEEShub.

The DesignSafe team envisions a comprehensive cyber environment for natural hazards researchers - both those funded by the NSF and those funded by other sources. The DesignSafe CI will be a place for researchers to share and analyze data, run simulations, interact with experimental facilities, and discover published results.

The DesignSafe CI will evolve over the next five years of the NHERI program. This initial public release provides some of the base functionalities of the CI, and a glimpse of the capabilities to come. With the initial public release, users will be able to:
* Upload, store, share, search and retrieve data using the DesignSafe Data Depot- via the web or command line interface. Upload through cloud storage integration with BOX.COM will be available soon.
* Use the initial version of the DesignSafe Discovery Workspace to perform simulations and analyze data using popular open source simulation codes OpenSees, ADCIRC, and OpenFOAM, as well as commercial tools such as MATLAB (software license verification required). Additional codes and tools will be available in the future.
* Visit the DesignSafe website for information about the NHERI facilities, NHERI Community news, and opportunities for training and outreach.
* Visit the Developer's Portal to learn how to automate the transfer of data into and out of DesignSafe, and see documentation on the Application Programmer Interfaces (API) that will allow new applications to be built on top of DesignSafe.

To use DesignSafe you can create a new account, populate a new account from an existing NEEShub account, or use an existing TACC account. The initial public release also contains information about DesignSafe cybersecurity and data policies, and a template Data Management Plan for researchers who wish to include the DesignSafe in their future proposals. For users of the NEEShub, you can still find all the legacy capabilities of NEES hosted by DesignSafe at nees.org, and much of the legacy NEES data has been migrated into the DesignSafe Data Depot.

Check back over the coming months to see new releases and enhancements as Year 1 of the DesignSafe project continues! More details about these plans can be found at https://www.designsafe-ci.org/rw/roadmap/.
