Position Description
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $12.8 million four-year cooperative agreement to Florida International University's (FIU's) Extreme Events Institute to support the design of a national full-scale testing facility entitled "National Full-Scale Testing Infrastructure for Community Hardening in Extreme Wind,
Surge, and Wave Events (NICHE)." NICHE will be capable of wind speeds of up to 200 miles per hour, combined with a water basin to simulate storm surge and wave action. FIU's academic partners for the NICHE project include the University of Florida, Oregon State University, Stanford University, the University of Notre Dame, the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Colorado State University, and Wayne State University. The principal industry partner is Aerolab. FIU is already home to the Wall of Wind (WOW), a
large-scale hurricane simulator capable of generating 157 mph wind speeds with rain intrusion. The WOW and NICHE are part of the NSF's Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI).

The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to participate in the NICHE design process and will facilitate conducting experiments at the Wind-Only Physical Design Testbed (WOPDT) to be built at FIU to inform the full-scale design NICHE.

This is a two-year post-doctoral position, with the possibility of renewal.The primary duties will include experimentation and data analysis to answer key research questions for NICHE design. The duties will include areas such as (but not limited to):

  *   Non-synoptic and synoptic flow simulations using flow control devices;
  *   3-D wind field characterization and validation;
  *   Pressure loading on building models and other structures in uniform, ABL, and non-synoptic flows;
  *   Measurements using specialized methodologies (such as PIV, LDA, etc.)
  *   Flow control systems, dual mode performance (open vs closed), wind flow parameters, wind induced responses on civil engineering structures;
  *   Efficiency and durability of equipment (e.g., fans, motors, switch gears) and components (e.g., high-frequency louver systems for flow controls)

Basic Qualifications
Candidates should have a doctoral degree from an accredited institution in relevant engineering discipline and have an interest in disaster preparedness, resilience, and hazard research. A successful candidate will have: (1) a strong experimental, quantitative and analytical background in wind engineering and/or fluid dynamics (2) Understanding of instrumentation such as Load Cells, Strain, Pressure, Displacement and Accelerometers and (3) effective communication skills with an ability to work within a multi-disciplinary research team. Experience in a research or
laboratory environment in the engineering field and experience with Matlab, Python, AutoCad, SolidWorks, C++ programming and Labview is preferred.
