[Nheri-council] DRAFT Entry for the NSF 2026 Idea Machine Competition

Dear Colleagues,

Kurt Gurley and I produced a rough cut for a ‘big idea’ that centers on reducing losses from natural disasters. We will start polishing it tomorrow for submission by COB Friday.

Feedback would be appreciated if you have the time. It is relatively short (~1200 words).

Sincere apologies for not getting this out sooner. Fieldwork in Hurricanes Florence and Michael set our schedule (way) back.

The NSF 2026 Idea Machine<https://www.nsf.gov/news/special_reports/nsf2026ideamachine/index.jsp> contest rules stipulate that only five authors can be included. We’ll sort out how to handle that once we see who actually wants to contribute (given such short notice).
