Dear NHERI Council,
It was great seeing you all yesterday! I am writing to follow up on the annual Natural Hazards Workshop and the Researchers Meeting that is set to immediately follow. So many of you have kindly joined us in recent years in Colorado – and last year, online. I hope that you will consider submitting as outlined below and/or encouraging your graduate students, REU students, and other members of your facility to get involved! In case you didn’t receive this letter from me from the Natural Hazards Center system, here are some key highlights:
1. We have opened the Call for Proposals for the 46th Annual Natural Hazards Research and Applications Workshop and also the Call for Abstracts for the 2021 Researchers Meeting that will immediately follow the Workshop.
* You can read the final theme statement and call for proposals for the Workshop, here: https://hazards.colorado.edu/workshop/2021/theme (deadline: March 29, 2021)
* And you can find the overview and call for abstracts for the Researchers Meeting, here: https://hazards.colorado.edu/workshop/2021/researchers-meeting/overview (deadline: March 29, 2021)
1. Plenty of other links and information in the letter below.
Thank you for sharing through your networks and encouraging others to submit ideas. Thank you also for saving July 11-14, 2021 (Workshop) and July 14-15 (Researchers Meeting), on your calendars. While we will be online again this year, I am hopeful we will see you in Colorado in 2022.
With every warm wish,
Lori

Questions?<mailto:hazards.workshop at colorado.edu?subject=2021%20Natural%20Hazards%20Workshop>
Dear Lori:
I am so pleased to invite you to contribute to planning the 2021 Natural Hazards Research and Applications Workshop<https://colorado.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b72140489b80a4574373938a1&id=21457200d0&e=d30393bd42> to be held virtually July 11-14 with the annual Researchers Meeting<https://colorado.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b72140489b80a4574373938a1&id=9e856633c9&e=d30393bd42> immediately following on July 14-15.
This year, the Workshop will be organized around the theme of The Hazards and Disaster Workforce: Preparing to Meet 21st Century Challenges<https://colorado.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b72140489b80a4574373938a1&id=e43af8a424&e=d30393bd42>. Please keep reading for a thematic overview and more information on how to share your ideas by March 29.
Our ability to reduce disaster risk has always depended on the people who do the work. As climate change accelerates and disaster losses mount, our future depends on fostering a well-trained workforce with strong adaptive capacity. At present, however, it is not clear that we have the people, resources, or institutional structures necessary to address the social roots of risk that turn natural hazards into human catastrophes.
At the 46th Annual Workshop, we invite contributions that will help establish how the workforce we have can support and build the workforce we need. Plenary and thematic sessions will highlight efforts aimed at cultivating a demographically diverse and highly skilled workforce. We will also explore societal trends that shape labor demands and rigorously assess what gaps exist in hazards workforce development, education, and training.
We will use the ideas generated from this call to inform the program for the 46th Annual Natural Hazards Research and Applications Workshop. As always, we are asking researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and others working in the hazards and disaster community to respond. We are excited to learn more from all of you as we chart a strategy that ensures we are ready to rise together to meet 21st century challenges.
Giving your input is easy—just visit our Workshop Proposal Form<https://colorado.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b72140489b80a4574373938a1&id=4a8e7901fd&e=d30393bd42> where you can share your recent work and responses to the thematic call. The final deadline is March 29, so please submit soon! We also hope that you will visit our Workshop Opportunities<https://colorado.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b72140489b80a4574373938a1&id=eb121ba19f&e=d30393bd42> page for calls for awards and other ways to get involved.
If you are planning on staying for the Researchers Meeting, we also welcome your abstract submissions<https://colorado.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b72140489b80a4574373938a1&id=450fc5ae4f&e=d30393bd42> now through March 29. The theme will focus on longitudinal research and the study of long-term disaster recovery.
Even if you decide not to respond to this call, we still hope you will join us in July. With half of each session devoted to audience questions and answers, everyone’s participation is important and valued. Workshop and Researchers Meeting registration<https://colorado.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b72140489b80a4574373938a1&id=f264a21181&e=d30393bd42> will open soon, as will the call for poster session proposals and research and practice highlights. Please ensure you and your colleagues are signed up<https://colorado.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b72140489b80a4574373938a1&id=f4875bcdb9&e=d30393bd42> for updates!
We’re grateful for your time and consideration and for the work that you do. Please take care of yourself and others.
