[Nheri-council] NHERI Computational Symposium - Abstracts Due

Abstract Submissions Open for 2024 NHERI Computational Symposium

Dear NHERI Council Members,

I am writing to encourage you and your colleagues to participate in the 2nd
NHERI Computational Symposium, which will be held February 1-2, 2024, at
the Luskin Center at UCLA. It would be great to have experimental site
users presenting comparisons between simulation and experimental results.

The symposium will be a good chance for the natural hazards research
community to meet together. Note that already being a user of SimCenter
tools is certainly not a requirement to attend and present research, so
please circulate to anyone that may be interested.

The abstract deadline is tomorrow (Aug 31) but will be extended a few
weeks.

The SimCenter invites you to the 2024 NHERI Computational Symposium

"Research to Impact," on Thursday and Friday, February 1 and 2, 2024, at
the Luskin Conference Center at UCLA.

This is an opportunity to meet and exchange research ideas, recent work,
and broader impacts with your colleagues in the natural hazards research
community: researchers, students, and industry practitioners. The event
will include plenary presentations and lightning talks, a poster session
reception, and thematic discussions.

The Symposium will focus on sharing and discussing recent research
developments, applications, and impacts of computational modeling and
simulation for natural hazards research. Participants are encouraged to submit
abstracts by August 31

to present recent research, teaching innovation, or professional
applications. Abstracts that include outcomes facilitated by SimCenter
tools, datasets, or other NHERI resources are particularly encouraged, but
any compelling, forward looking, simulation-based abstracts will be
considered, including social-science based research that employs simulation
results. Topics of particular interest include:

   - hazard simulation: wind, hurricane, tsunami, wildfire, earthquake;
   - CFD modeling of wind, storm surge and tsunami effects;
   - calibration of analyses to experimental data;
   - building and infrastructure inventory development;
   - regional simulations of physical damage, socio-economic impacts, and
   recovery from natural hazards;
   - applications of AI/Machine Learning;
   - uncertainty quantification;
   - sustainability or climate adaptation;
   - enhancing educational experiences for the next generation of
   researchers through simulation; and
   - broader impacts of research using modeling and simulation.
