Ellen and all,<br>

It would seem to me that the first year we were all represented at
the workshop was valuable. Joy was there, too, <br>
and met the group. Also, the first year designsafe organized a
larger meeting to introduce ourselves and for the <br>
TACC team to lay out their plan for creating the security plan
templates. This latter item has been accomplished.<br>
I am fine with not going having achieved the objectives above and
with designsafe representing the NHERI Awardees<br>
closing the loop with the meeting you proposed after each Summit. <br>
<br>
I noticed that this year it is being held near the new NSF campus.
That would be interesting to see, where the NSF is <br>
now located; but that is more touristic curiosity. If it’s
determined by the Council that we still have an obligation to <br>
send someone, I am happy to send Chris. However, your point about
budget is well taken. This money <br>
could be used in other areas that would arguably benefit the program
more. <br>

CA and in section 2.5 it states:<o:p></o:p></p>

style="font-size:10.0pt">“Awardee shall participate
annually, if organized that year, in one NSF supported
Large Facility Workshop and one NSF supported
Cybersecurity Summit.”<o:p></o:p></span></p>

style="font-size:10.0pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-autospace:none"><span
style="font-size:10.0pt">Presumably, you all have the
same in yours (but please check). Although Joy
intimated that we should all go because it was in our
CA and we budgeted for it, here are some thoughts
(note that Joy is not copied on this email):<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-autospace:none"><span
style="font-size:10.0pt"> Every other of
the 26 LF’s sends one person - we are one LF (with 11
awards)<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-autospace:none"><span
style="font-size:10.0pt"> It is a waste
of time and money for us all to send personnel<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"
style="text-indent:.5in;text-autospace:none"><span
style="font-size:10.0pt">We could re-budget the travel
costs associated with the summit without NSF approval
since it is less than $50k.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-autospace:none"><span
style="font-size:10.0pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-autospace:none"><span
style="font-size:10.0pt">Despite the arguments above,
it seems that is up to each of you to decide if you
are willing to risk not going to the Cybersecurity
summit and being out of compliance with your CA.
DesignSafe will have a representative there, so we
could propose to Joy that we hold a Zoom call after
the Cybersecurity summit to discuss the broad themes
presented at the meeting.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
