This week, the NHERI Wall of Wind Experimental Facility is performing
experiments on a 1:50 scaled model of a crawler crane installed at a
construction site in the urban area of Downtown Miami as part of an
NSF-funded project. Experiments will be performed at various wind speeds
and wind directions. A Cobra probe is used to measure the mean and
turbulent characteristics of the wind and a 6-DOF load cell is installed
under the crane to measure the wind loads experienced by the crane. Later
in the week, the proximity model will be changed to a suburban setup to
investigate the terrain effects on wind loads imposed on the crane.

the experimental setup (8am-12pm) and the efforts involved in preparing for
the test and changing the setup (12-4pm).

Here is a summary of the project.

*Project Title: Uncovering Potential Risks of Wind-induced Cascading
Damages to Construction Projects and Neighboring Communities *

*PI: Youngjib Ham, Department of Construction Science, Texas A&M University*

*NSF Program: Civil Infrastructure Systems (CIS)*

Summary: Using knowledge of potential at-risk construction resources
obtained through experimental testing of extreme wind events, this project
will partially or fully automatically model the current state of
construction sites through machine vision techniques using multimodal
visual data obtained from construction workers and camera-equipped unmanned
aerial vehicles. To perform multi-physics simulation of multiple discrete
objects in unstructured construction sites, an impulse-based discrete
element method will be conceptualized. Component-based vulnerability and
impact analysis with 3D Building or Civil Information Models (BIM/CIMs)
will then be conducted to generate fundamental and highly specific
knowledge on wind-induced damage mechanisms. Finally, the entire system
will be validated in real-world construction projects and within a 12-fan
NHERI Wall of Wind facility that can generate up to hurricane category 5
wind speeds.
