Center for Geotechnical Modeling connects with Facebook
[https://www.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public_thumbnails/filer_public/06/27/062716be-bb56-4e38-a293-21307955f1dc/nheri_cgm_facebook_screenshot.png__960x480_q85_subsampling-2.png]
Creating a Facebook page for your experimental facility is a simple way to generate interest in a center's research - as well as increase personal interactions with the site team, fellow researchers, all ages of students and their parents, and the public at large.
A fine example social media at work is the Center for Geotechnical Modeling at UC Davis, a NHERI EF. On the CGM Facebook group<https://www.facebook.com/groups/1512274609062503/>, site PI Dan Wilson recently posted a year-end research roundup, highlighting efforts by multiple individuals on the team.
>From browsing the posts and the photos on the CGM page, we get a tangible sense of accomplishment and camaraderie. Clearly, it's an interesting and enjoyable place to work!
When you visit<https://www.facebook.com/groups/1512274609062503/>, be sure to follow, the CGM (right under the lead photo) to get occasional updates.
Be sure to follow the NHERI Facebook page<https://www.facebook.com/NaturalHazardsEngineeringResearchInfrastructure/>. For suggestions on starting a Facebook page for your NHERI EF, contact Marti LaChance, NCO communications specialist: nheri.communications at gmail.com.

Smart morphing façades for adaptive buildings in wind events
[https://www.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public_thumbnails/filer_public/76/60/76606832-30b9-46c0-83e9-6c24e1e726e6/fiu_smart_morphing_facades_team.png__960x480_q85_subsampling-2.png]
A multi-disciplinary team of researchers from Iowa State University (ISU) and Kansas State University (KSU) received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF)<https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1826356&HistoricalAwards=false> to develop a solution to decrease the losses associated with buildings under extreme wind events.
Alice Alipour, Assistant Professor of the ISU's Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) is collaborating with her colleagues Behrouz Shafei, CCEE, and Partha Sarkar, Aerospace Engineering, at ISU and Jared Hobeck, Mechanical Engineering at KSU to reinvent building façade systems as multifunctional, active structural units. This will transform the façades from a passive element serving its traditional architectural and functional role to an "alive" engineered system that can protect a building against extreme wind events, decrease structural costs, and eventually contribute to a sustainable solution for energy saving.

Spearheading reconnaissance in Alaska

The Structural Extreme Events Reconnaissance (StEER) Network is pleased to release its Preliminary Virtual Assessment Team (P-VAT) Report for the November 30, 2018 Alaska Earthquake. Of particular note is the collaboration with the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute<https://www.eeri.org/> (EERI), joint publishers of this document which integrates the narrative report of the StEER Virtual Assessment Team with the briefing prepared by EERI's Virtual Earthquake Reconnaissance Team (VERT). The full EERI VERT Briefing is included as an appendix to this report and cross referenced throughout.
This report gathers this wealth of publicly-available information, (i) overviewing the hazard characteristics event, (ii) summarizing the preliminary reports of damage to wide-ranging of infrastructure, (iii) presenting data from instrumented structures, (iv) enhancing situational awareness to guide subsequent reconnaissance missions, and (v) fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange between StEER and EERI. The P-VAT report represents the first product of StEER's larger coordinated response to this event, informing and supporting other research teams seeking to learn from this disaster.
This report is in the process of curation at DesignSafe under Project PRJ-2153, DOI forthcoming.

Navigating the New Arctic (NNA) is one of the National Science Foundation's 10 Big Ideas. A new solicitation, NSF 19-511<https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2019/nsf19511/nsf19511.htm>, is requesting proposals that bring together diverse disciplinary perspectives to support convergence research and encourages new researchers and those already working in the Arctic to work together at the intersection of natural, social and built systems.
NNA Solicitation 19-511 is online at https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2019/nsf19511/nsf19511.htm and the FAQs for the solicitation are at https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2019/nsf19017/nsf19017.jsp.
Informational webinars take place Dec. 13 and 18 and Jan. 10 and 14.
Please make sure to review the solicitation documents before joining a webinar session.
Click to download a PDF with webinar information and details for participating<https://www.nsf.gov/geo/opp/arctic/nna/NNA%20Webinar%20announcement.pdf>.
The latest NNA updates are at https://www.nsf.gov/geo/opp/arctic/nna/index.jsp. For inquiries not addressed by the webinar or FAQ, contact us at nna at nsf.gov<mailto:nna at nsf.gov>.

NHERI researchers speak at the American Geophysical Union fall conference
Three NHERI researchers presented their work at the prestigious fall AGU conference. This year's event took place in Washington, DC, and ran from Dec. 10 through 14.
A research team that included Pedro Lomonaco, co-PI of the NHERI EF at Oregon State University, described large-scale laboratory experiments at OSU that involved subharmonic edge-wave excitation. Read more<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/community/news/2018/december/agu-talk-subharmonic-edge-wave-excitation/>.
Lori Peek, PI of the new CONVERGE facility, introduced the newly minted center. She discussed ways social scientists will work with natural hazards engineers to understand and reduce systemic risk among vulnerable people, structures and places. Read more<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/community/news/2018/december/peek-present-converge-fall-agu-conference/>.
A team of tsunami experts including NHERI researcher Hermann Fritz spoke about post-tsunami reconnaissance efforts on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, a mission that included deploying equipment from the NHERI RAPID facility. Read more<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/community/news/2018/december/tsunami-reconnaissance-revealed-fall-2018-agu-conference/>.
Georgia Tech researchers, including NHERI tsunami expert Hermann Fritz, discussed modeling tsunamis generated by submarine volcanos at the NHERI-OSU wave basin. Read more<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/community/news/2018/december/agu-talk-modeling-tsunamis-submarine-volcanoes/>.

Data show that a professor's encouragement is the number one motivator for students to apply to the NHERI REU program.
Over the winter break, please take time to forward information about this extraordinary NSF-funded opportunity to students interested in natural hazards research.
Find details about the program on the DesignSafe website<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/learning-center/reu/>, including instructions for applying.
The DEADLINE for REU applications is Feb. 1, 2019.
