Planning revisions to the Science Plan

The NHERI Science Plan Task Group<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/facilities/nco/science-plan/> is calling on researchers and practitioners in the natural hazards community to make suggestions for improving the current edition of the NHERI Five-Year Science Plan. New feedback will to help guide revisions for the 2018 Science Plan.

Joint RAPID-WoW workshop engages prospective researchers

Together, Florida International University and the University of Washington hosted a NHERI Users Workshop at the FIU Wall of Wind Experimental Facility. The May 17 and 18 event provided potential NHERI users with useful information about the resources and services available at the NHERI WOW and RAPID EFs, and provided practical tips for engaging the EFs to obtain NSF funding for natural hazards mitigation research. NSF CAREER Award to study wind hazards in urban environments at the WoW

Catherine Gorlé, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, recently received a 2018 National Science Foundation CAREER Award<https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1749610&HistoricalAwards=false>. The award recognizes early career faculty who show equal dedication to research and education within their departments and institutions.

The research will use the NHERI Wall of Wind<https://fiu.designsafe-ci.org/> facility at Florida International University and archive project data in the NHERI Data Depot<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/data/browser/>. The Data Depot is a repository of hazards engineering information where researchers upload, organize, collaborate, analyze, visualize and formally publish their data with a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). Call for NSF "highlights" research

Do you know of a natural hazards research project that is making an impact on the profession and the world?

The NSF is requesting influential NHERI research stories to publish as "highlights," news-like items that explain the value of an NSF-funded project. NSF uses highlights in a variety of ways, including in its website newsroom and in a printed annual report sent to Congress.

At NHERI-DesignSafe, research highlights appear in the quarterly newsletter<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/community/news/quarterly/>, which has been favorably received by NSF.

NHERI SimCenter Programming Bootcamp, July 30 - August 3

The NHERI Computational Modeling and Simulation Center is hosting a SimCenter Programming Bootcamp at the UC Berkeley Richmond Field Station. The bootcamp trains new NHERI researchers, including grad students to new faculty, in programming paradigms not covered in traditional civil engineering courseware, but which are needed to advance their capabilities with regards to simulation for natural hazards engineering. The June 1 episode features Tampa-based emergency manager Tom Iovino, who preps us for the 2018 hurricane season. Host Dan Zehner talks with Iovino about some less-than-obvious dangers related to hurricanes, and Iovino proffers excellent advice for anyone near hurricane-prone areas, from Texas to Maine. Iovino starts off by warning that both NOAA and the Colorado State University hurricane researchers predict a slightly more intense hurricane season for 2018.
