Mete A. Sözen, Karl H. Kettelhut Distinguished Professor, Emeritus of Civil Engineering, Purdue University, died unexpectedly on April 5, 2018, just a few weeks before what would have been his 88th birthday. Mete was in London, England, with his wife Joan visiting their daughter Ayshe and two grandsons when he fell peacefully to sleep.
In memory of Mete, a group of friends and colleagues, including many members of the NHERI community, recorded their memories about this remarkable man. We encourage you to read about his life and legacy.

This week, DesignSafe Radio host Dan Zehner's guest is research engineer David O. Prevatt<http://www.davidoprevatt.com/>, associate professor of civil and coastal engineering at the University of Florida and associate director of the Wind Engineering Research Laboratory<https://multihazard.eng.ufl.edu/> at UF, a facility in the NSF NHERI network<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/>. A wind engineer, Prevatt discusses the social and the practical problems disaster-prone communities face - whether it's planning for a hurricane or rebuilding after the windstorm hits. Listen to the FULL STORY<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/community/news/2018/april/designsafe-radio-david-prevatt/>.

SimCenter Welcomes Nikhil Padhye to the Development Team
[https://www.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public_thumbnails/filer_public/21/6a/216a6ccc-5153-4759-8764-7bda9c93f04c/npadhye2.jpg__343x210_q85_subsampling-2.jpg]
The NHERI SimCenter is pleased to announce that Nikhil Padhye, PhD, has joined the software development team, where he will work on enhancing SimCenter<https://simcenter.designsafe-ci.org/> optimization and finite element model (FEM) algorithms in conjunction with uncertainty quantification (UQ) methods to expand existing software capabilities. "The SimCenter is fortunate to have hired Dr. Padhye, and we are excited to leverage his background. We look forward to working with him to enhance our software portfolio," says SimCenter co-director Sanjay Govindjee.
Padhye completed his Bachelor's-Master's (BT-MT, Dual-Degree) from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, earned his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was a postdoc at Stanford University. His research interests include applied and computational mechanics, optimization and mechanics of materials. He has research and consulting experience with major manufacturing and energy industries, and he has enabled several key technology transfers from academia to industry. His combined experiences in academia and industry make him a valuable addition to the SimCenter development team.

NHERI Leaders Present at 2018 ASCE-SEI Congress

A contingent of researchers from the NHERI NCO and several experimental facilities presented at the 2018 Structures Congress in Fort Worth, Texas, April 19-21, 2018.
NCO Director Julio Ramirez reports that session participants were engaged and asked interesting questions. It was an excellent opportunity to discuss how NHERI's NSF-funded, shared-use research infrastructure can help practicing engineers and researchers do better research, and to do it in ways not possible before NHERI - with the shared goal of improving the resilience of civil infrastructure against natural hazards. The talks included the following:
Dan Cox<http://cce.oregonstate.edu/cox> of Oregon State University: NSF NHERI Shared-Use Experimental Facility for Coastal Wave/Surge and Tsunami Hazards Engineering
Patricia Clayton<http://www.caee.utexas.edu/faculty/directory/clayton> of University of Texas: NHERI at UTexas: Large Mobile Shakers for Natural Hazards Engineering Field Studies
JoAnn Browning<http://engineering.utsa.edu/civil-environmental/team/joann-browning-ph-d-p-e/> of UT San Antonio: NHERI Education and Community Outreach: Creating a Diverse Community of Natural Hazards Engineers
Jeff Berman<https://www.ce.washington.edu/people/faculty/bermanj> of University of Washington: The NHERI RAPID Facility: Enabling the Next-Generation of Natural Hazards Reconnaissance
The presentation talks soon will be available on the DesignSafe website. Stay tuned for an announcement.

An NSF CAREER Award was recently granted to study fundamental fluid vortex breakdown at high Reynolds numbers in wind turbines and gas turbines. This project, awarded for $500,000 in January 2018, is entitled "Control of Vortex Breakdown in High-Reynolds Number Rotor Flows with Secondary Vortex Structures" (NSF award # 1751918). The project is led by Victor Maldonado, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
