SimCenter releases new research tool: WE-UQ

The WE-UQ Tool is an application to determine the response, including uncertainty quantification, of a structure to wind loading. The application quantifies the uncertainties in the predicted response, given that the properties of the building and the wind loads are not known exactly, and given that the simulation software and the user make simplifying assumptions in the numerical modeling of the structure. The community-driven software capitalizes on various types of wind loading options to characterize the event.

After Ridgecrest quakes, NSF-funded researchers spearhead reconnaissance, data collection

Responding to the recent Searles Valley earthquakes in Southern California — an M6.4 on July 4 and an M7.1 shortly thereafter on July 5 — natural hazards engineers and other researchers funded by the National Science Foundation moved into action.

Within hours of the series of earthquakes and aftershocks that occurred over the July Fourth holiday, researchers from the NSF-supported Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) Association were onsite in the affected region collecting valuable data about the geophysical aspects of these significant events. Equipped with cameras and other data recording devices, the GEER team sought to measure important physical effects of the earthquakes.

NHERI presents at the 44th Annual Natural Hazards Workshop and Researchers Meeting

For 44 years, the Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado Boulder has hosted the Natural Hazards Research and Applications Workshop<https://hazards.colorado.edu/workshop/2019>. This year, the meeting focused on the theme of Convergence<https://hazards.colorado.edu/workshop/2019/theme> and brought together 661 individuals who are dedicated, in a variety of ways, to alleviating the harm and suffering caused by disasters.

At this year’s event, held July 14 to 17 in Broomfield, Colorado, representatives from the various components of the National Science Foundation-supported Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure, NHERI, presented in a special session on the importance of the shared-used engineering facilities, cyberinfrastructure, and multi-disciplinary research coordinating networks for the nation.

This summer, 16 of the REU students working at NHERI’s experimental facilities had the chance to attend the 44th annual Natural Hazards Research and Applications Workshop<https://hazards.colorado.edu/workshop/2019> in Broomfield, Colorado, July 14-17, 2019. The students stayed on for the Researchers Meeting<https://hazards.colorado.edu/workshop/2019/researchers-meeting> that immediately followed the Workshop to present posters on their summer projects.

MECHS 2019: Spring workshop, research agenda update

The Multi-hazard Engineering Collaboratory on Hybrid Simulation (MECHS) virtual community has now been active for two years, and together we are making major strides toward expanding the scope of hybrid simulation (HS) methods beyond seismic applications to support research tackling wind, wave and other natural hazards.

Based on the presentations and discussions at our recent joint workshop with ETH Zurich<https://mechs.designsafe-ci.org/workshops/>, an explosion in the capabilities and implementations of hybrid simulation is now taking place.

To document these advances and foster new research ideas, an updated Research Agenda for Hybrid Simulation has been posted on the MECHS website, located here: mechs.designsafe-ci.org<https://mechs.designsafe-ci.org/>.

New video introduces NHERI

Dan Zehner, NHERI facility scheduler and operations coordinator, worked with the NSF media team and representatives from the NHERI facilities to create a two-minute video overview of our NSF-funded NHERI network. The video debuted at the 44th Annual Natural Hazards Workshop, where it was a hit with the audience of natural hazards professionals.

Sharing the video clip is a great way for NHERI faculty, staff and students to provide a visual answer to the question: "What does NHERI do?"
