Feb. 1 deadline nears for NHERI REU application

FACT: The majority of NHERI REU alums say that they were encouraged to apply to the summer research program by one of their professors.

NHERI faculty and staff: now is the time to nudge promising undergraduates to apply for outstanding, NSF-funded summer research program in natural hazards engineering. The printable REU flyer is online at the DesignSafe website<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/learning-center/reu/>. Program details and the application form are also online.

NHERI's 2019 REU summer research program offers 10 weeks of hands-on natural hazards research at one of NHERI's world-class research facilities.

Application deadline is Feb 1.

ASCE honors for Jonathan Bray

ASCE has honored NHERI researcher Jonathan D. Bray<https://www.ce.berkeley.edu/people/faculty/bray> with the 2019 Karl Terzaghi Award<https://news.asce.org/bray-honored-with-2019-karl-terzaghi-award/> for his effective leadership and contributions to the geotechnical engineering profession, and for following in the footsteps of Karl Terzaghi in expanding the state of the art of that profession.

Bray is the Faculty Chair in Earthquake Engineering Excellence at UC Berkeley. He will receive the award at Geo-Congress in Philadelphia on March 26. With NHERI, he serves on the Science Plan task group<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/facilities/nco/science-plan/>.

Among his many research accomplishments, Bray helped pioneer major innovations in earthquake reconnaissance, including GPS-oriented use of coordinated aerial, ground, and subsurface investigations of earthquake effects on soils and foundation performance, and has exercised leadership in organizing, coordinating, and participating in geotechnical reconnaissance not only of earthquakes, but of other natural hazards such as hurricanes.

Honors for Ross Boulanger

Congratulations to Ross Boulanger for honors received at the 16th Symposium on Earthquake Engineering held at IIT Roorkee, India, in December 2018.

Boulanger directs the Center for Geotechnical Modeling at UC Davis, one of the NHERI experimental facilities.

Boulanger received the prestigious Indian Society of Earthquake Technology's Shamsher Prakash Prize for Excellence in Geotechnical Engineering, along with co-recipient Ikuo Towhata of the University of Tokyo. The award honors individuals for a lifetime of outstanding contributions in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering.

At the 16SEE, Boulanger also gave the Indian Society for Earthquake Technology (ISET) lecture<https://www.iitr.ac.in/16see/isetannuallecture.html>. His talk was entitled Analyses of liquefaction effects for an interbedded soil deposit: Çark Canal in the 1999 M7.5 Kocaeli Earthquake. NHERI RAPID makes TV news

On Jan. 15, Jake Dafni and Jeff Berman of NHERI RAPID experimental facility appeared on Seattle's KOMO News for the story, "Rental gear kit available for scientists responding to natural disaster." Dafni and Berman had the chance to show off their equipment and explain how natural hazards researchers will use it to collect data.
