NHERI at the AGU fall meeting

Representatives from NHERI and its experimental facilities will be in attendance at the AGU fall meeting, Dec. 9-13 in San Francisco. Please stop by booth 110<https://events.jspargo.com/AGU19/Public/eBooth.aspx?IndexInList=12&FromPage=Exhibitors.aspx&ParentBoothID=&ListByBooth=true&BoothID=643161> and say hello!

Dan Zehner, NHERI NCO facility scheduling and operations coordinator, and Seungwook Seok, research assistant at Purdue University, attended the Tornado Hazard Wind Assessment and Reduction Symposium (THWARTS), October 14 and 15.

Using the newly minted NHERI conference booth, the pair promoted the network resources for world-class physical and cyberphysical testing capabilities.

The booth provides a large visual representation of the network and a focal point for discussions with conference attendees. NHERI researcher Elaina Sutley, also chair of the User Forum, was one of many who brought over colleagues to discuss opportunities for groundbreaking research in the area of tornadic wind storm hazard reduction.

UF wind engineers: on a mission

As Hurricane Dorian began bearing down on the Bahamas on August 30 and 31, the University of Florida's Forrest Masters and his team of wind engineers were scanning forecasts and models for the perfect time and place to park their mobile weather stations to measure the storm's surface wind structure during landfall along the U.S. east coast. (Above: the UF 15-meter tower 2 weather station.)

The University of Tokyo's Earthquake Research Instititute (ERI) is pleased to announce a blind prediction competition<http://www.eri.u-tokyo.ac.jp/KUSUNOKI-LAB/index17.html> for an E-Defense test to be performed in December 2019<http://www.eri.u-tokyo.ac.jp/KUSUNOKI-LAB/index17_4.html> as part of the Tokyo Metropolitan Resilience Project. (The blind predictions are estimates about specific outcomes of the shake test. See the contest rules.)

The test specimen is a 3-story reinforced concrete building with spandrel walls casted monolithically with the frame elements. Participants will be tasked with predicting various building response parameters, such as peak interstory drifts and base shear. For details on contest rules, specimen details, test plan and prizes, click here to visit the project web site<http://www.eri.u-tokyo.ac.jp/KUSUNOKI-LAB/index17.html>.

Securing the built environment against natural hazards requires serious technical sophistication. DesignSafe<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/>, the cyberinfrastructure component of NSF’s Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI), provides a robust platform for researchers building on new ideas. With over 4,000 users and 10 TB of data, the platform embraces a cloud strategy for managing big data, the mountains of information generated by natural hazards engineering and social science researchers.

CONVERGE releases its Social Vulnerability training module

The Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado Boulder has released the CONVERGE Social Vulnerability and Disasters Training Module. The module is the first in a series of online trainings that can assist natural hazards researchers from a range of disciplines. The module, which draws on numerous studies of disaster, will also be useful to early responders, such as engineers and disaster relief personnel, in applying social science best practices to rapid reconnaissance research.
