Engineers who engage: Elaina Sutley

Each month, the NHERI Monthly Recap features a researcher who successfully communicates their work in natural hazards with colleagues, industry and the general public.

[https://www.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public_thumbnails/filer_public/93/45/9345361f-a376-4e95-a5c8-1a50b2925fd0/elainasutley_nasem_newsletter.jpg__500x547_q85_subsampling-2.jpg]

In many ways, University of Kansas engineer Elaina Sutley is a typical researcher. She publishes in peer-reviewed journals and other technical periodicals, and she presents at conferences and meetings.

But for Sutley, another key to communicating her professional undertakings and achievements is the Sutley Research Group<http://people.ku.edu/~e244j869> website, which she keeps current. The site enables anyone — colleagues, prospective students, practicing engineers, the media — to discover her expertise<http://people.ku.edu/~e244j869/projects.html>. She includes the link in her email signature and features it in her LinkedIn profile<https://www.linkedin.com/in/elaina-sutley-06168649/>.

>From early in her career, Sutley made it a practice to share professional accomplishments with her university’s communications team. “The engineering school shares faculty news on its Facebook and Twitter accounts, and if significant enough, in the annual magazine, Kansas Engineer,” she says. Her research made the cover of the Fall 2019 issue<https://issuu.com/ku_engineering/docs/kansas_engineering_-_fall_2019_-_final>. To date, the University of Kansas newsletter, KU Today, has produced five articles highlighting her research — and numerous other stories about Sutley’s awards, honors and outreach work<https://news.ku.edu/search/node/sutley%20type%3Aku_news_article_official>.

Top article in Natural Hazards Engineering News

For the month of August, an article on wind-hazard mitigation and RTHS testing was the most clicked-on news item in NHERI’s Natural Hazards Engineering Newsletter. Assessment of wind-induced vibration mitigation in a tall building with damped outriggers using real-time hybrid simulations<https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0141029619308600?via%3Dihub>

Engineering Structures, February 2020

This study, performed at the NHERI Lehigh experimental facility<https://lehigh.designsafe-ci.org/facility/overview/>, examines the ability of damping devices placed between outrigger trusses and perimeter columns to mitigate dynamic vibrations in a tall building structure. The implementation of this approach to mitigate wind-induced vibrations for a 40-story building is assessed via a series of real-time hybrid simulations (RTHS), in which a numerical model of the complete building actively interfaces with physical dampers in the laboratory via actuators. In a RTHS, the overall structure is divided into analytical and experimental substructures, where the latter is challenging to model numerically and therefore evaluated in the laboratory as the experimental substructure. The experimental substructure for the RTHS in this study includes two full-scale nonlinear viscous dampers, and the rest of the building is modeled numerically as the analytical substructure.
