Dear Colleagues:
We would like to encourage your advanced graduate students to apply by
mid-February for an *April 22 – May 1, 2020, Advanced Studies Institute
(ASI) in Wellington & Christchurch, New Zealand*, focused on protective
systems for mitigating the effects of natural hazards; this ASI is
sponsored by the *PREEMPTIVE Multidisciplinary Natural Hazards Engineering
Institute Series for Advanced Graduate Students* NSF project
18-29085/-28948 that was funded through NSF’s *International Research
Experiences for Students* (IRES) program. Students will participate in
the *Annual
Conference 2020* of the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering
(NZSEE) in Wellington, technical and cultural tours, and a multiday
workshop at the University of Canterbury.
*Please distribute the attached flier* to any qualified students and
encourage them to apply (at https://goo.gl/forms/Q1nb1EWl9BFAJlJk2) for the
New Zealand ASI; the application deadline is coming up soon (original
deadline Feb 10 is extended to *February 16, 2020*). (To apply, they will
also need you to email us a recommendation letter.) Note that NSF only
allows this project to fund graduate students who are *U.S. citizens or
permanent residents*.
The goal of this series of ASIs is to build a diverse community of
researchers across the Pacific Rim, and beyond, who share a focused
interest in understanding, promoting and accelerating the adoption of
protective systems to provide resilience for building and infrastructure
systems and ensure sustainable societies. This project builds on the
NSF *Pacific
Rim Earthquake Engineering Mitigation Protective Technologies International
Virtual Environment* (PREEMPTIVE) project 14-46424/-46353 that provided
similar opportunities for junior faculty during the previous several years.
The first PREEMPTIVE ASI was held in February 2019 in Costa Rica and the
second in June 2019 in Thailand; they both went extremely well and were
great experiences for the students and faculty mentors. After New Zealand,
we will be organizing, over the next year-and-a-half, three additional ASIs
in Japan (Sept. 2020 before and after the 17WCEE), Chile (2021), and Puerto
Rico (2021). To increase participation in the program, graduate students
will typically participate in only one ASI; a select few graduate students
will be asked to participate in a second ASI.
Thank you in advance for your help in disseminating this opportunity to
advanced graduate students in your group and department. Please let us know
if you have any questions or if you need any additional information.
Best regards,
Erik, Rich & Gigi
