Disaster Resilience Research Grants, DRRG
NHERI and DesignSafe researchers should be aware of Program Solicitation NSF 20-581, Disaster Resilience Research Grants (DRRG).
With this joint solicitation, the NSF and the U.S Department of Commerce (DOC) National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) call for proposals for research to advance fundamental understanding of disaster resilience in support of improved, science-based planning, policy, decisions, design, codes, and standards.
NSF and NIST will hold an informational webcast on August 3, 2020, to discuss the DRRG program and answer questions about this solicitation. More details about the webcast will be posted at https://www.nist.gov/el/disaster-resilience/disaster-resilience-federal-funding-opportunity-ffo as they become available. The webcast will be archived and available for viewing for at least 3 months following the event.
Letters of intent are due August 14, 2020. Proposals are due by September 15, 2020.
Find details about the program, eligibility and submission instructions on the NSF website:

Support for justice and equality in natural hazards research
For those of us who stand against racism and wish to support people of color in our field, consider reviewing and signing on to a statement from the North American Alliance of Hazards and Disaster Research Institutes, NAAHDRI. Many of our colleagues who are leaders of centers and institutes across the region have already done so.
Statement on Systemic Racism and Disasters from the North American Alliance of Hazards and Disaster Research Institutes<https://www.naahdri.org/about/statements/>
If you wish to sign in solidarity with this statement, please email your name, title, and affiliation to Lori.Peek at colorado.edu<mailto:Lori.Peek at colorado.edu>.

Prevatt's Wind Hazard Damage Assessment Group, over the years.
Hats off to David O. Prevatt, PhD, his students and collaborators. Recently, the group published three papers of importance to their ongoing studies and the field of wind engineering. Their efforts, and those who continue to work in wind engineering, are helping reduce societal losses through application of their engineering research.
The Wind Hazard Damage Assessment group includes Dr. David B. Roueche of Auburn University; Mr. Anant Jain; Mr. Arpit Bhusar; Mr. Jason Lopez of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; in collaboration with Professor Frederick J. Haan of Calvin College.
The articles are as follows:
* Engineering-Based Tornado Damage Assessment: Numerical Tool for Assessing Tornado Vulnerability of Residential Structures<https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fbuil.2020.00089/full>
* Wind Resistance and Fragility Functions for Wood-Framed Wall Sheathing Panels in Low-Rise Residential Construction<https://ascelibrary.org/doi/full/10.1061/(ASCE)ST.1943-541X.0002653?af=R>
* Tornado-Induced and Straight-Line Wind Loads on a Low-Rise Building With Consideration of Internal Pressure<https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fbuil.2020.00018/full>

The NHERI-CONVERGE facility, headquartered at the Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado Boulder, is excited to announce the release of a new training module that focuses on Institutional Review Board (IRB) procedures for extreme events research. With this module, natural hazards researchers will learn best practices in working with human subjects.
Released in June 2020, this course is the fourth in a series of online training modules<https://converge.colorado.edu/training-modules> developed by the CONVERGE research team. These interactive, 30- to 60-minute modules cover a variety of topics that assist hazards and disaster researchers and research teams from a range of disciplines, including engineering and geophysical sciences, in applying social science best practices to extreme events research.

The Structural Extreme Events Reconnaissance<https://www.steer.network> (StEER) Network has released its Preliminary Virtual Reconnaissance Report (PVRR) summarizing its findings on the impacts of the 23 June 2020 Mw 7.4 earthquake in Oaxaca, Mexico. The report was prepared by StEER’s Virtual Assessment Structural Team (VAST) and relies upon publicly available news reports, social media, and other resources. The PVRR can be accessed at https://aub.ie/steer_2020_oaxacamx_EQ and is curated on NHERI DesignSafe.
Anyone can follow StEER teams and their work on the DesignSafe Slack channel<https://www.designsafe-ci.slack.com>.

2020 MECHS Collaboratory video competition
The MECHS Collaboratory<https://mechs.designsafe-ci.org> is pleased to announce the “MECHS 3-minute thesis" Video Competition for students conducting research related to hybrid simulation.
Promote your research and magnify your impact!
Winners will receive a certificate, be recognized on the MECHS homepage and YouTube channel — and be invited to deliver a MECHS webinar.
Graduate and undergraduate students from around the world are welcome to participate. Each entry should discuss some aspect of their dissertation or thesis that is related to hybrid simulation — which is also known as dynamic sub-structuring or pseudo-dynamic testing.
All submissions are DUE BY midnight (Eastern Time, USA) on July 31st.
