2019 NHERI REU student, Haley Hostetter, with NCO Director, Julio Ramirez. Hostetter did her research project at the University of California, Berkeley-SimCenter.

Given NHERI site closures and travel bans due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the in-person NHERI REU Program and the Summer Institute for Early Career Faculty have been postponed.

A virtual NHERI Workshop for Early Career Faculty will take place online June 29, 2020. This program will introduce faculty to NHERI resources as well as give an overview of the NSF proposal process and the CAREER award. Information and registration can be found at:

https://www.designsafe-ci.org/learning-center/virtual-2020/

To introduce undergraduates to NHERI resources and the REU experience, an alternative virtual program will be held during the summer.

The ECO Committee is currently preparing features of the program and will communicate them to undergraduates interested in NHERI.

More details for both virtual programs will be posted in the DesignSafe Learning Center and will be communicated to the NHERI community via email. Thank you for your patience during these challenging times.

Educators and researchers: the NHERI SimCenter is hard at work developing new software and updating existing applications to advance the field of natural hazards computational simulation.

Two new educational applications<https://simcenter.designsafe-ci.org/learning-tools/overview/> include S3hark<https://simcenter.designsafe-ci.org/learning-tools/site-specific-seismic-hazard-analysis-research-kit-s3hark/> and SWIM<https://simcenter.designsafe-ci.org/learning-tools/shear-wall-intelligent-modeling-swim/>, which have engaging interfaces to facilitate learning important modeling strategies.

Expanding on artificial intelligence applications, the SimCenter released two research tools that are implemented at the back-end of several SimCenter applications.

Building Recognition using Artificial Intelligence at Large Scale (BRAILS<https://simcenter.designsafe-ci.org/research-tools/brails/>) utilizes machine learning and deep learning to create enhanced building inventory databases of cities, which helps to inform regional simulations.

Building Information Models to Structural Analysis Models Using Artificial Intelligence (BIMtoSAM.AI<https://simcenter.designsafe-ci.org/research-tools/bimtosam_ai/>) creates a finite element model of a wall for structural analysis based on input from a building information model.

A special issue dedicated to RTHS benchmark problem

[https://www.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public_thumbnails/filer_public/a0/e5/a0e53bd5-f1de-4897-8baa-4d93334a9aad/mssp-cover.png__800x210_q85_subsampling-2.png]

Benchmark problems have been especially useful in enabling a community of researchers to leap forward on a given topic, distill the lessons learned, and identify the capabilities and limitations of various approaches.

This Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing special Issue on the Real-Time Hybrid Simulation Benchmark Problem is dedicated to advancing the field of real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS), considering a wide range of issues critical to its effective use.

The collection of manuscripts assembled in this special issue represents the latest techniques and tools used in the RTHS community. We anticipate that the lessons learned with this benchmark problem will provide a clear pathway forward to more extensive use of RTHS methods as we seek to realistically and cost-effectively examine the performance of our civil infrastructure.

The special issue was published in the February 2020 issue of the journal Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing<https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/mechanical-systems-and-signal-processing/special-issue/10SNCQC0BKN>.

Special issue guest editors are:

  * Daniel Gomez, Universidad del Valle, Cali, Colombia
  * Shirley Dyke, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, USA
  * Bill Spencer, University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, USA

Visit the MECHS (Multi-Hazard Engineering Collaboratory for Hybrid Simulation)<https://bit.ly/2ySTBSo> website for more information about NSF-funded activities in the field of RTHS.
