NSF features Wall of Wind video

In September, NSF featured a new Wall of Wind video in its multimedia gallery. The lively, 12-minute video, narrated by Erik Salna of the Extreme Events Institute and the International Hurricane Research Center, at Florida International University in Miami, Florida, describes facility capabilities in lay language. The segment is one in a 12-part series called Eye of the Storm<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__mods.org_events_eyeofthestorm_&d=DwMFaQ&c=lhMMI368wojMYNABHh1gQQ&r=fbp1hO-ut2w1Y2PrvbG1Iw&m=GaH0TA5OX1ORRO3zriIC4uRCj1kzYkG6Ig7mx3NE9kY&s=YMUzwSg5nh98TCwncUvArwhPg2zEMXrNeCWX0NVc-0A&e=>, which covers hurricane science, mitigation and preparedness and was a partnership with the Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale.

Salna, a meteorologist, leads outreach efforts for the WOW, one of NHERI’s 11 experimental facilities. He developed the script and had video support from NOAA and other partners. In part, financial support for the series comes from the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

During the 2020 hurricane season, NHERI researchers have been working around the clock, alongside diverse groups and individuals, collecting data on wind storm strength, location and resulting damage. All members of NHERI DesignSafe community<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/account/register/> are welcome to join Slack<https://app.slack.com/client/T2DB36S4D/C019HME4S6Q> forums to follow the storms — and the intrepid NHERI researchers.

NHERI supports pandemic-related hazards research

With support from NHERI, an NSF EAGER project led by Professor David Mendoça of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will explore the development of a more flexible research agenda in hazard mitigation.

The collaborative project brings together experts in industrial engineering, civil engineering, and public policy. Team members from NHERI include NCO Director Julio Ramirez and StEER Director Tracy Kijewski-Correa. Researchers will collect and analyze case study data in order to develop an initial research framework, which will help inform a comprehensive agenda for researching the design and operation of the built environment in a way that supports mitigation of pandemic joint hazards.

“NHERI researchers are exploring the resilience of the built environment in relation to earthquakes, high-wind, and other events. They are available to the engineering and science communities to confront the grand challenge presented by the threat of pandemic joint hazards around the globe," said Ramirez.

Each month, the NHERI Monthly Recap features a researcher who successfully communicates their work in natural hazards with colleagues, students, industry and the public.

As an established and highly cited researcher in multiple areas of natural hazards engineering, Ahsan Kareem enjoys adopting new technology and new ideas. As early as 2011<http://scholar.google.com/scholar_url?url=https://www3.nd.edu/~evo/resources/DASC2011.pdf&hl=en&sa=X&ei=bIRrX8DfLs_qyASZ8YfACA&scisig=AAGBfm370xEw33H4_Z-T5gtko6wOUG_IWA&nossl=1&oi=scholarr> he was writing with his colleagues on crowdsourcing and “citizen engineering.” In this month’s Recap, he shares his best-practices for using technology to communicate engineering research with colleagues and students.

Just as his interests vary widely, so do his engagement tools. For his Twitter followers, he tweets links striking news items. For direct communications with colleagues, he uses multiple real-time messaging tools. And, thanks to a foresightful student, Kareem's professional details are kept current on his own Wikipedia entry.
