Dear NHERI REU Alum,

Please check in and let me know how you’re doing. During this pandemic, I hope you are doing well and continuing to excel in your career. I’ll give you an update on me at the end of the email. So, keep reading…

I am reaching out to you, because we have had to postpone our NHERI REU 2020 Summer Program due to the pandemic. In response to this major change, we are putting together an informative program for undergraduates and would like to solicit your help.

We’re thinking of having web meetings to introduce students to research and NHERI, and we would like for you to share your experiences either in a panel or in a presentation. Please let me know which programs below interest you. Which would you participate as a presenter? Would you prefer a panel where you are asked questions or a presentation where you tell us about your experience? This will be great for future researchers and NHERI REU students to learn about your experiences, and as always, you can invite family and friends to watch AND add it to your resume and CV. Here are some of the ideas we have:

  * A Day in the Life of an REU Student
  * What is Research? What I wish I had known before my REU experience
  * Research Presentation: My project in the REU Program
  * How the NHERI REU Experience Impacted my Career Goals
  * Other: add it here please

Also, please let me know if you prefer to be a panelist or a presenter. Thank you in advance for your response.

UPDATE: I now am officially an assistant professor of engineering education at UTSA. It took me 3 years to “find” this position and be hired in a tenure track faculty role after completing my doctorate. I had many interviews as well as rejections, but I believe we land where we are meant to be. I am very happy to have been a part of your NHERI REU experience and I intend to be close by. I am working to hire a new person to fill my role since I now have other duties and have been trying to manage both “jobs”. So stay tuned for more details to come.

Update for the NHERI REU students, we have a number of students now in PhD programs (~20% of REU Alumni who have graduated). About a third of those who graduated have gone on to graduate school (masters level). Other graduates have entered industry as practicing engineers. About a quarter of students (just under 25%) are still completing your undergraduate degrees. All (100%) who have participated and completed the NHERI REU program have remained in an engineering or scientific degree program. We have had students from very diverse backgrounds go through the REU program, and we know you are positively impacting the world with your work. I personally want to express how proud I am to know you and to have been a part of your educational experiences. You’ve taught me much and I hope you know I have cared deeply about your success.

Let me know how I can help, and please help us spread the word about our program by sharing your experiences and PAYING IT FORWARD!

Sincerely,

Karina I. Vielma, Ed.D.
