About the Webinar

The ADvanced CIRCulation Model, or ADCIRC, is a high-performance, cross-platform numerical ocean circulation model popular for simulating storm-surge, tides, and coastal circulation problems. ADCIRC utilizes the finite element method to solve the shallow water equations in either a three-dimensional or two-dimensional depth-integrated form on a triangular unstructured grid and has been optimized to be highly parallel and run on supercomputers. While running singular ADCIRC simulations is fairly straightforward, coordinating large batches of ADCIRC simulations can be a challenging task requiring a lot of human and computational resources. These large ensemble simulations are becoming increasingly frequent in applications such as model parameter estimation and storm-surge risk prediction. Configuring, executing, and managing outputs for these large groups of ADCIRC runs is a challenging task that is done in an ad-hoc and manual way. We present a novel HPC Application for configuring, running and managing outputs for ensembles of ADCIRC runs. The application utilizes TACC's pylauncher utility, a flexible python tool allowing users to configure batches of HPC jobs to execute under one main job allocation, thus reducing the total queue wait time as opposed to submitting each job individually. The application has been successfully used to efficiently conduct ensemble ADCIRC simulations in a variety of applications, most recently producing a data-set related to ~500 synthetic storms off of the coast of Texas in a fraction of the time it normally took to conduct those batches of storms manually without the application. This dataset has been published and is freely available through Designsafe.

About the Presenters

Clint Dawson is professor and department chair of the Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics department at the University of Texas at Austin. He leads the Computational Hydraulics Group in the Oden Institute at UT. His research interests include coastal ocean modeling, with applications to hurricane storm surge. He is one of the lead developers and users of the Advanced Circulation (ADCIRC) Model. Prof. Dawson is also a co-PI on the DesignSafe project. Benjamin Pachev and Carlos del-Castillo-Negrete are PhD students in the Computational Hydraulics Group at the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences. Benjamin is working on reduced-order modeling and HPC systems. Carlos is working on Bayesian parameter inversion.
