NATURAL HAZARDS ENGINEERING
NEWS AND RESEARCH
CURATED WEEKLY

For the week of Jan 22, 2018
*A society divided by reconstruction*

Peter Rüegg, ETH Zurich

It takes more than engineers to rebuild after disaster strikes. In 2004, a
tsunami devastated much of the Indonesian city of Banda Aceh. An
international team of researchers has studied the long-term impact that
rebuilding efforts in coastal areas have had on the community.

*Concrete walls with high-strength rebar lay foundation for code change*

Engineering News Record

If structural engineers have their way, building codes will take a leap
forward in the next couple of years to allow the use of higher-strength
80-ksi reinforcing steel in concrete shear walls in high seismic zones. The
codes currently only allow 80-ksi rebar for nonseismic applications.

*Expert: Oversizing a common issue with precast concrete*

Construction Week online

Speaking at a recent conference, Halûk Sucuoğlu, director of the structural
and earthquake engineering laboratory at Turkey’s Middle East Technical
University, highlighted the need for performance-based seismic designs to
boost the resilience to earthquakes of structures made of precast concrete.
*Developing "breakaway" tsunami-resistant buildings*

The best designs can also be the most surprising. A promising new concept
for tsunami resistant buildings features breakaway walls and floors on
lower levels that, when removed by forceful waves, strengthen the structure
and better protect occupants seeking safety on higher floors.
