NHERI impact in Frontiers in Built Environment
To raise awareness — and to encourage shared-use of NHERI experimental facilities — the Network Coordination Office led an effort for all NHERI components to publish informational articles in the journal Frontiers in Built Environment and to create an E-book with the collection of all 15 articles.
In the spring of 2020, NHERI established its own research topic in FBE: Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) 2016-2020: Mitigating the Impact of Natural Hazards on Civil Infrastructure and Communities<https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/11791/natural-hazards-engineering-research-infrastructure-nheri-2016-2020-mitigating-the-impact-of-natural>.
The NHERI topic consists of 15 articles written by more than 100 authors; 14 of the 15 articles are available online, and one is under final review.
The impact of these papers is significant. As of December 2020, the NHERI topic has been viewed more than 15,000 times and has resulted in more than 1,100 article downloads.
To access the articles and explore the impact statistics, visit the NHERI research topic online<https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/11791/natural-hazards-engineering-research-infrastructure-nheri-2016-2020-mitigating-the-impact-of-natural>.

Virtual tours of LHPOST6

The upgrade to the Large High Large High Performance Outdoor Shake Table, LHPOST, continues apace. Once the work is completed, in the fall of 2021, the NHERI at UC San Diego shake table will be able to reproduce earthquake ground motions in six-degrees-of-freedom. The facility, now called LHPOST6, will significantly advance earthquake engineering.
Although COVID-19 restrictions disallow on-site tours, the UC San Diego facility had generously created a virtual tour. Site PI Joel Conte provides an informative 20-minute walk-through of the work in progress. Find it on YouTube:

NHERI REU application deadline: Feb. 3, 2021

As the holiday break approaches at American universities, now is a good time to remind students and friends to apply for the NHERI Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, a world-class summer research program.
NHERI faculty are our most successful REU recruiters, so we urge professors and post-docs to alert their high-achieving students to this career-enhancing opportunity. Many REU alums go on to graduate studies in natural hazards.
The 10-week program gives students hands-on experience at a NHERI facility. Students work on a research project, network with fellow students around the country, and prepare a poster to present at a capstone conference. REU participants also receive a stipend.
Find details and application info in the DesignSafe Learning Center<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/learning-center/reu/>. The NHERI ECO is holding an informational seminar on Jan. 21st. Register here: https://bit.ly/REU_NHERI.
The deadline for NHERI REU applications is Feb. 3, 2021.

Pauschke presents during 2020 AGU Fall Meeting
Joy Pauschke, Program Director, Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI), Directorate for Engineering (ENG), National Science Foundation, presented a talk on NSF funding opportunities on December 14, 2020, at the NHERI booth during the AGU Meeting.
In the hour-long talk, Pauschke provided an overview of funding opportunities within NSF, including those within CMMI and Mid-scale Research Infrastructure. She also offered suggestions for NSF proposal preparation and described NSF’s merit review process.
More than 70 individuals participated in the Zoom session, which was hosted by Robin Nelson, education specialist with NHERI’s Education and Community Outreach team.

Zekkos leads GEER mission for Medicane Ianos

Dimitrios Zekkos, associate professor at UC Berkeley, led a Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance<http://www.geerassociation.org/> (GEER) mission to document damage from Medicane Ianos. Medicane Ianos, a Mediterranean Hurricane, impacted Greece on September 17-20, 2020.
During Medicane Ianos, the amount of precipitation during a duration of about 48 hours was among the highest recorded and exceeded, in certain areas, the mean annual precipitation. The extent of the affected area was very large and encompassed western, central and southern Greece, all the way south to the island of Crete. The Ionian islands and the areas around Karditsa and Lamia in Central Greece were particularly affected.

NEW: EF proposal planning meetings
During the NHERI Summer Institute, prospective users have a chance to meet directly with EF faculty. It is a valuable way for researchers to get specifics about NHERI facilities and personal guidance for writing NSF grant proposals.
With virtual meetings now being commonplace, the NHERI’s Education and Community Outreach team has decided to leverage NHERI’s Zoom meeting capabilities — and offer these one-on-one meetings on a regular basis. The sessions are scheduled via the Eventbrite event management service, and the meetings themselves run in Zoom.
Currently, Florida International University, Lehigh University and UC San Diego offer one-on-one meetings to prospective faculty users.
“These sessions give our faculty an easy, personal way to answer questions about their facilities,” says Robin Nelson, ECO coordinator.
To learn more about scheduling one-on-one sessions for your facility, contact Robin Nelson at robin.nelson at utsa.edu<mailto:robin.nelson at utsa.edu>.
