NHERI Facilities Offer Virtual Office Hours

PBS Terra Channel Features Sutley Lessons from Linwood Tornado

NHERI research engineer Elaina Sutley, assistant professor at the University of Kansas, recently appeared on the PBS Terra channel to discuss the EF4 tornado that hit Linwood, Kansas in May of 2019.

Virtual Wall of Wind Competition for High School Students

Teams of local high school students competing in the 2021 NHERI Wall of Wind Mitigation Challenge were tasked with designing a way to reduce the impact of wind scour – the process of wind scraping against surfaces – on a building’s flat roof. The competition was virtual this year, but still rigorous – and exciting.

The NHERI CONVERGE facility announces the release of its latest online training module, Broader Ethical Considerations for Hazards and Disaster Researchers<https://converge-training.colorado.edu/courses/broader-ethical-considerations-for-hazards-and-disaster-researchers/>. The module covers ethical considerations for conducting research in a disaster setting. It also describes how ethical concerns infuse the entire research lifecycle and underscores challenges that can occur in the context of disaster research.

Long-Term NIST Community Resilience Study Releases Second Report

The NIST Center for Risk-Based Community Resilience Planning has released its second report on the significant 2016 flooding of Lumberton, North Carolina. This report documents recovery efforts and highlights community resilience in the aftermath of disaster. The survey instruments for this high-profile, longitudinal study are published in the DesignSafe Data Depot.
