Heads up: Improved email communications to come
DesignSafe and the NHERI NCO are planning significant improvements to NHERI network email communications. Over the next few months, the team will be deploying an email client called MailJet, which gives users more choices about the email they receive. Stay tuned!

NHERI Summer Institute, June 16-17

The Summer Institute is NHERI’s free annual event for early-career faculty, graduate students, K-12 educators, engineers, and researchers — anyone who wants to learn more about the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) community. The in-person space has been filled, but virtual attendees are welcome to join the event online.

NSF Workshop on Societal Shock Resilience
[https://www.designsafe-ci.org/media/filer_public_thumbnails/filer_public/38/a5/38a5d7a7-ba00-4004-97cd-f678a9308ece/nsf_societal_shock_diagram.png__722x744_q85_subsampling-2.png]
DesignSafe Principal Investigator Ellen Rathje is one of the convenors for the upcoming workshop on Societal Shock Resilience<https://www.scec.org/workshops/2021/resilience>. Registration is open<https://forms.gle/Yn9HhCwt4fthFz6UA> for this event, which takes place June 7, 8 and 11.
The event is supported by the NSF Convergence Accelerator Program<https://www.nsf.gov/od/oia/convergence-accelerator/> and brings together a multi-hazard, multi-disciplinary, and trans-disciplinary community to discuss and revise a proposed Societal Shock Resilience Framework that will most benefit from the NSF convergence approach. The goal will be to identify interactions and actionable pathways to “connect the silos” of the framework’s elements (society, shock, exposure, vulnerability, response, recovery, mitigation). The event convenors encourage registrants from a broad range of relevant expertise and and professions. Details on the workshop website<https://www.scec.org/workshops/2021/resilience>.

SimCenter's Peter Mackenzie-Helnwein on DesignSafe Radio

In May 2021, the DesignSafe Radio podcast<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/podcast> features a series of interviews with Peter Mackenzie-Helnwein<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/community/news/2021/may/designsafe-radio-simcenter-peter-mackenzie-helnwein/>, SimCenter educator and research associate professor of engineering at the University of Washingon. Mackenzie Helnwein and Frank McKenna, chief technology officer at the SimCenter, lead the popular SimCenter bootcamps. The courses teach programming techniques to natural hazards engineers — techniques such as automating data analysis and performing simulations. Accurate and detailed natural hazards simulations are crucial data for governments to make informed decisions about the security of their city or state.
Tune in to DESIGNSAFE RADIO<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/podcast/>.

Gathering data from landfalling hurricanes

At NHERI’s University of Florida Experimental Facility<https://ufl.designsafe-ci.org/>, wind engineers from around the nation use the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel to test structural behavior in a variety of wind environments. In 2021, the lab is making available a new system called the Flow Field Modulator to recreate these environments, which can be informed by hundreds of hours of field-measured, ground-level hurricane wind velocity data.
And where does that data come from? UF wind engineer Forrest Masters and his team transport portable weather stations to coastal suburban communities where the most damaging winds are expected to occur.
DesignSafe users are welcome to follow Masters and his storm tracking team on DesignSafe’s Slack<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/community/slack-online-collaboration/> workspace.

In April 2021, the American Sociological Society announced that Lori Peek<https://hazards.colorado.edu/biography/lori-peek> was chosen to receive the prestigioius Fred Buttel Distinguished Contribution Award<http://envirosoc.org/wordpress/section-awards/>. Peek is professor of sociology at the University of Colorado Boulder, director of the Natural Hazards Center, and principal investigator for the NHERI CONVERGE<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/facilities/converge/> facility.
The Distinguished Contribution Award recognizes individuals for outstanding service, innovation, and publication in environmental sociology or sociology of technology. It is intended as an expression of appreciation awarded when an individual is deemed extraordinarily meritorious by the ASA Section on Environmental Sociology.
