Throughout 2020 your work using DesignSafe has been rewarded with a ~50% increase in data and platform citations, as compared to 2019. Details regarding the citation metrics can be found at The Impact of Data Reuse<https://www.designsafe-ci.org/rw/impact-of-data-reuse/>. The increase in citations is due to your diligence citing the published datasets that you create/reuse in DesignSafe, and the functions that DesignSafe provides to facilitate this task. Moving forward, we can continue to improve this record.
Below are strategies we recommend to improve citations and data reuse. These tips are based on two main principles: (a) citing data in a technical paper provides strong evidence about your work and stimulates data reuse, and (b) the DOI technology is the key element for tracking your datasets, and for facilitating their discovery and access.
* Always cite published datasets in the references section of your papers using the full data citation and DOI in https format (https://doi.org/xxxxx). This DOI format provides a direct link to the dataset and is provided for each published dataset under the blue Citation button.
* Cite (with a DOI in the references section) all data used in a technical paper, including:
* Your own published datasets
* Datasets produced by others that were used in your work. If a dataset was described in a Data Paper, cite both the data paper and the dataset.
* In technical presentations at conferences, workshops, etc., describe not only your research findings but also the availability of the enabling datasets (including the DOI). Researchers trust the quality of data that is mentioned in technical presentations and learning about a dataset at a professional conference is one of the best strategies for promoting data reuse.
* Acknowledge your data publications as the scholarly contributions that they are: list them in your CV, include them in any online presence you have (e.g., faculty pages, research center pages), and promote them using social media--always including the DOI.
We encourage you to continue using DesignSafe as a venue to publish your data and expose your work. Working together, we can enhance the availability of data, promote data reuse, and enable new advances in natural hazards research.
