NOTES:
DesignSafe/EF Collaboration Meeting
* We will have a strategic meeting with the DesignSafe and the EF PIs on October 20, 2020 to see how we can help each other.
* If there is something strategic that you think we should discuss at the meeting let Ellen know or talk to your PI about it.
Issues with data publication/upload
* Focused on making sure the data models work so you can organize your data well is the first priority. Vocabulary is secondary.
* WOW discussing how to improve their data storage including storing external data. Looking at storing it at TACC but we have clients with NDAs and don't know if that would work to store the data at a third party location instead of locally at FIU
* Pedro - we have nothing specific in our data management plan in the renewal; took a while for people to know what they are doing through TACC but working ok. For certain things we still use Box and Dropbox but so far so good.
* We do have some clients with NDA and data that we can't touch ourselves they collect with their own system; There are issues with the info even in Box and other places;
* Anything that is not NSF we don't upload it to DesignSafe we keep it ourselves, there is info we have to destroy so we want to keep it locally as there is concern in removing it from the cloud.
* Ellen - if you think it might get published don't see a reason to not make all your data management similar and store it in DesignSafe. Anything that is NSF
* UF's big concern is where is the data is physically located? They want to make sure it is in the state of FL if there are any legal issues; might want look for local sources in your state. This is a part of UF's risk management plan
DesignSafe Updates
* If you have been on DesignSafe recently in the published area we have released a new advanced search
* Trying to label all projects to make searching easier
* please test it out and let us know I you have any issues as it is still in progress.
* Bulk download - projects with huge number of files, there wasn't an efficient way to download those files but now we have zip every project. In upper right hand corner there is now a bulk download button to download the whole project.
* Still trying to figure out the tree, that is created on the web and is not in the backend, so we would like that organization to be transferred.
Other Topics
* Thomas Marullo - submitted a ticket about not being able to use Greek characters in texts on the DesignSafe webpage, it comes up as a ? and will not render it. ACTION: Tim will follow up with Hedda on the status
* Pedro - question on the creation of DOIs; is there a selection criteria on what is publishable as DOI and what isn't? Are we diminishing the value of creating the DOI of the data? People were struggling on finding the data and not just presentations and other things that were coming up.
* Ellen: Think the key going forward is data citation, that will show the value, not just having a DOI but that it is cited.
* We will be tracking and exposing metrics on your projects. You will see your project been downloaded.
* We are also getting in with Google dataset so that you can track data and in the long run think that will show the value of DOIs
* Need to convince the PIs that it is worth publishing in DesignSafe. Not everyone is doing it for NSF projects. It will be required for final reports.
* we are initiating an annual Dataset Award; we are still working on the criteria and what the award will be.
