it makes sense to share with the rest of the NHERI council. Julio — can
you do this?

3. Anything else?
Just curious, when Rick Fragaszy retired, did the geotech community do
anything formal? If so, it might be good do something similar for Joy.
In coastal engineering, we’ll sometimes dedicate a session to a
person who recently retired and has had a big impact on our field, but
I’ve not seen this done for a program manager.
Alternatively, we could thank Joy during a plenary session of the next
big structures conference (with travel paid by the conference
committee)? Or potentially at the next NHERI Computational Symposium?
I’m just trying to think of what Joy might like — would she want to
see the research community in person on more time, or is she more likely
to want to step away entirely. I really don't know

It seems as though everyone has taken a look (thank you all!). Possible
next steps:
1.
Julio or Dan share with NHERI Council for general buy-in/comments.
2.
Marti/Chris/Hedda post in NHERI News on DesignSafe, social media,
and in next newsletter.
3.
Anything else?
Warm regards,
JoAnn

Thanks JoAnn for a great draft! I really wish we had contact
information for Joy so we could reach out and ask questions...
Anyway, I made edits just for clarification sake. And I thought the end
was somewhat abrupt, but struggled with the exact wording to end the
write up.
Feel free to use or not any of the comments!
Thanks,
Ellen

Hello Julio, Dan, and Ellen,
Here is a first try
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PCOiUmRVjjZsYHMGvcyeo09BkYlobZB6wXiTEr_X_ok/edit?tab=t.0> just
to get us started - please be cruel to be kind and make any
edits/comments that feel appropriate. I am happy to try to resolve them
as they are posted. Anyone else we should ask to make comments?
A few notes:
*
I reached out to Giovanna to see if she has any more information
about Joy's tenure at NSF because there is very little online---but
maybe we do not really need more.
*
Please double check my dates for NEES and NHERI to make sure that
they are correct.
*
Giovanna has LinkedIn that lists her places of employment so I feel
confident about those dates.
Warm regards,
JoAnn

Dan and all,
Please see revised minutes with additional information on the "NHERI
presents..."
Let me know if you have additional comments.
On the message about Joy, I will clear this with NSF (Giovanna). In
the meantime we could
start a draft for the Bimonthly newsletter or a separate
announcement. Who would like to take the
first stab at it? JoAnn or Ellen perhaps?

Hello again, Dan,
That's a great idea - something to formally thank Joy and
welcome Giovanna.
In a chat with Giovanna a couple weeks ago, the idea of a
workshop came up to honor Joy (in some way that is feasible with
NSF policies) and she was going to look into it. Will check
back with Giovanna to see if it has any legs, but think it could
be along the lines of "NHERI presents" but with the biggest
outcomes that launch us into the next 10 years. What do you think?
Warm regards,
JoAnn

JoAnn — Sounds good. Thank you for being willing to moderate this!
Julio — Can we add a line in the Aug 7 min that we discussed the
idea of a “NHERI Presents…” webinar and the action item that
JoAnn describes below
Will do! Thanks Dan.
All — Another thought occurred to me: did we distribute
anything thanking Joy for her service and dedication to
NEES/NHERI? Or formally welcome Giovanna as the new program
manager? It might make sense to follow up the July NHERI
Council Message with a “Thank you Joy/Welcome Giovanna” message
in August. If you all agree, we could draft something, float
it by the council via email, and then post/send it by end of
August (before the next council meeting)
I will clear this with NSF (Giovanna). In the meantime we could
start a draft for the Bimonthly newsletter. Who would like to take the
first stab at it? JoAnn or Ellen?

Thanks, Dan!
We have scheduled our meeting of the renewing elements for Aug
18 and this is our only agenda item at the moment.
The suggestions below are in line with the thoughts that were
expressed last week and will definitely be considered in our
planning. I was planning to volunteer to moderate/lead/admin,
but also want Ellen, Joe, and Matt input.
Appreciate your support, as always!
Warm regards,
JoAnn

Julio, JoAnn
The minutes look ok to me.
At the end of the meeting, there was a discussion about the
‘visibility’ of NHERI while we are in a holding pattern
regarding the solicitation, etc. I proposed something simple
like a monthly webinar series titled “NHERI Presents …” I got
a few direct messages from folks saying they liked the idea.
Some details of what I was thinking:
*
Given that the plan is for NCO, SimCenter, RAPID, DesignSafe
as the NHERI components that don’t have to compete, it might
make sense if you all do it. I’m happy to help since I
suggested it, but I don’t need to be involved if it slows
things down.
*
Aim for a 30 min (total) webinar.
*
Can use the same time slot at our NHERI council meeting and
switch from the first Thursday to the third Thursday.
*
Record and post for folks who can’t attend live
*
Have a standard agenda
o
1-2 min intro by host (NCE/Simcenter/RAPID/DesignSafe)
o
20 min presentation
o
5 min Q&A
o
1-2 min other announcements, including who’s next
*
Solicit names from NHERI Council by Aug 20 to get the Fall
series lined up.
o
From HWRL, I’d recommend Barb Simpson at Stanford who
is doing interesting work on Fluid-structure
interaction, including hybrid (numerical/physical)
experiments. Or Pat Lynett at USC who is working on
digital twin & VR
*
Choose names that you see fit (don’t need a complicated
selection process)
o
Julio, JoAnn — now that we have a new program manager, it might
be a good opportunity to show leadership of the NCO. A
NHERI-wide webinar series might help with that.
