OpenSees is a widely used software framework for finite element analysis of structural and geotechnical systems subjected to earthquakes and tsunamis. When OpenSees was developed, it was linked to the Tcl scripting language for model building and analysis. Recently, OpenSeesPy, a Python3 module for OpenSees, was developed in order to build upon the wide range of scientific and numerical modules available in Python.

This webinar will cover the use of OpenSeesPy on DesignSafe, including basic nonlinear structural analysis examples, plotting analysis output using numpy and pyplot, and troubleshooting convergence errors.

Michael H. Scott is the Glenn Willis Holcomb Professor Structural Engineering in the School of Civil and Construction Engineering at Oregon State University. He is a core developer of the OpenSees framework and his research group extended the framework to simulate fluid-structure interaction and to build models with Python. Prof. Scott's research and teaching interests include nonlinear structural analysis, numerical methods, and fluid-structure interaction.
