Due to the overwhelming demand of this summer's third annual
Programming Bootcamp, the SimCenter is offering another *Programming
Bootcamp this winter*. The two-week (3 hour per day, plus homework and
pre-class preparation) event is a stimulating and robust introduction to
programming, software development, and machine learning to enable natural
hazards engineering research. Registration is available for one or both of
the weeklong sessions.

The overall goal of the Bootcamp is to train NHERI researchers in
programming paradigms not covered in traditional civil engineering
courseware, but which are needed to advance their capabilities with regard
to simulation for natural hazards engineering. The event is a stimulating
and robust introduction into software programming to facilitate research
outcomes.
The target audience is graduate students, postdocs, and new faculty who are
interested in simulating the effects of natural hazards on building
components, structures, and communities. During the 2-session, 10-day
Bootcamp, participants will be instructed by and interact extensively with
the SimCenter’s lead development team. A sampling of course modules to be
offered include:
Session 1 (December 14-18, 2020)
· Computer Architecture
· Programming in Python
· Web scraping for data collection
· Machine Learning in Natural Hazards Engineering
Session 2 (January 4-8, 2021) Note: Prior Programming Experience Recommended
· Programming in C and C++
· Parallel Programming for High Performance Computing with MPI
· Parallel Exercises on TACC's Stampede2 (High Performance Computing)
· Introduction to and Adapting SimCenter Tools to Your Research
Each session will include videos for self-study in preparation for live,
on-line classes, interactive in-class demonstrations and discussion,
hands-on exercises, and assignments. Class will be held each day from 10 AM
– 1 PM (PST), but participants should expect to commit much more time each
day to tackle assignments and prepare for the next day with the
pre-recorded videos. Since the content builds on previously presented
material throughout the week, it is critical to participate throughout the
week. The final agenda and meeting logistics will be issued to registrants.
General registration
<https://na.eventscloud.com/ereg/index.php?eventid=590721&>: $25 per 5-day
session
Registration deadline is December 11, 2020, or until limited spaces are
filled. Spaces are limited to enable enhanced interaction between
participants and SimCenter developers.
